Introducing....Kirk! *More*pics*added*

My Dad surprised my mother and me when he took us on a Sunday drive, and we ended up at a goat ranch to see some border collie pups.

Well, you know how that goes....going to just 'look' at some puppies... :eek:

WE ARE GETTING A PUPPY!!! :D:D:D

I really had no idea he was even seriously considering getting another dog. My theory is that after seeing amazing BCs in New Zealand last year combined with a recent robbery at our house, he decided he was ready. My family loves dogs (especially BCs) and we have talked about getting another, but the decision was ultimately up to them and not me.

The breeder is someone we know from the local Border Collie Club. I highly respect and trust her. We are heading out to see the pups again tonight. I will have more pictures soon! Until then I have some more pictures from when he was 5 weeks.

He comes home with us on May 31st! He will be 8.5 weeks old. We are out of town until the 30th, so that's why we're taking him home a bit later. It has been 10 years since our sweet Jack came home with us in the summer of 1996. Although this is such a wonderful surprise and a most exciting time, it has also brought some bittersweet feelings for me. :(

I picked the pup...and my Dad picked the name. :rolleyes: He really loves the name, so I've decided not to 'fight' him anymore on it. It is starting to grow on me a bit; it's certainly a unique dog name. *sigh* I just hope people don't associate it with Star Trek cause that's not where he got it!! (My gripe is that it's not a 'dog' name, and it's too harsh sounding with all the consonants.)

Anyway, it was sort of hard to choose a pup at only 5 weeks, but it's also somewhat of an 'affair of the heart.' I knew he was special after the first 5 minutes. :D Here is how my Dad described him in an e-mail: He is endearing for many reasons, including his plump & happy little body, his friendliness toward all three of us, and his constantly wagging tail. SO CUTE! Terry (the breeder) told us recently over the phone that he's turning into quite the little rascal! hehe

I also want to add that besides being so happy to be adding a dog to our family (for selfish reasons), I am also so happy that my Dad made this decision FOR HIMSELF. He has a form of leukemia and had to retire early as a result. These days he spends a lot of time doing a whole bunch of *cough* nothing*coughcough*, and I want to see him more engaged and active. As a family we have really enjoyed spending time with Tigger, our neighbor-friend's BC. Now that Dad will have his own dog to train and love on, I think it will add years to his life. I love seeing him so happy and excited!! He needs this in more ways than I can possibly explain - for his soul, his peace of mind, his health.... :D

First of all, Thank you all SO much for being excited along with me!! That makes it even more fun. :) I will be sharing lots of pictures because I know how the puppy months speed by!

Ginger's Mom - yup, that's my lap. He is such a friendly little thing and I think this series of shots captures that. His widdle tail is but a blur! :D

bckrazy- You like the name?? Kidding... it is starting to grow on me more and more. My Dad LOVES it, and was quite hurt after I voiced my initial reaction. (I'm just glad I'm not a boy...or it would be my name....;) )

Staci- We considered names relating to his cute little ear splotch or his heart shaped blaze, but my Dad just LOVES the name Kirk. I also think the heart shape won't be so prominent once his full coat grows in, that's just my guess though...

We visited again on Friday and will see him once more before we leave on our trip. As of yesterday the pups are 7 weeks old!! They were running around a lot more during this visit, so we got a ton of blurry shots. We did get some cute ones, but I have to warn you...my Mom didn't zoom in enough and I ended up in a bunch of the pics. :p

Kirk is one of the more independent, adventuresome & playful pups. He is friendly certainly, but not the least bit clingy. He sharply contrasts to the little female runt, who attached to me as soon as I squatted down to 'pup level' and rarely left my lap the whole time we were there. She will most certainly grow up to be a velcro dog! Their personalities have all developed a lot from when we saw them last. Ok, now on to the pics...

I brought a little stuffie with me in order to get Kirk's littermates & Mom's scent on it. Kirk loved the toy!! He played with it more than any of the others. I think I will bring another toy when we go to see him next.
