I have 3 cats as most people already know. My oldest of the 3 her name is Mopar. Last weekend started to drag her rear across the carpet. Then on Wednesday she walked past me and I could smell this strong smell of urine on her. So I started to investagate and I thought that in the past she has scooted her rear because she is overweight and can't reach her bottom and so I decided last night that I was going to shave her hair because she also has problems with matting in the spring. Come to find out her little rear end is very swollen and inflammed. I have an appointment with the vet tomarrow but was hoping someone here might be able give me some insight. Please tell me its nothing serious :( I should have looked at her rear last weekend but I figured it was because of her hair was bothering her. I am so sad. I hope my big girl is o.k???? I love her so much.

From my experience, it COULD very well be her anal glands need expressing. But that's just a guess.
Has she been having alot of diarrhea lately? It could also be that her rear is sore and that's why it's swollen. But I'm glad you're taking her to the vet just to be sure.
Please keep us posted.

It could be anal glands (and they could even be infected) but that smell is MUCH worse than urine.
If the cat is heavy and unable to clean herself in the rear end area, the urine could be accumulating and causing a form of "diaper rash".
And the theory about diarrhea is also valid.
A urinary tract infection could also cause soreness, especially if she needs to go a LOT.
The veet visit is your best bet.
Good luck, keep us updated.

And some suggestions from the vet on some lose-weight nutrition might not hurt... :)

It does sound like an anal gland problem to me, thanks to the info on PT when i noticed my Lexie doing exactly the same thing , i took her to the vet and one of her glands was inflammed, however there was no smell, also some do that if they have worms the vet told me, however Lexie is dosed every three months,so that was not her problem, she was given a course of antibiotics and was fine after that.
