is dead. :( I don't know what happened.
I'll explain more as I compose myself.
He was just a baby!
Edit to update****
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Last night, we were doing some yard work. We decided to let the cats out and let them enjoy the day. This would have been Payton's first time outside without his leash. All was well, he was being a good boy, staying in the yard, etc. While we were doing the yard work, I guess we got distracted and didn't notice that Payton had left the yard. I thought that I had "catproofed" the yard and that he would be able to get out. I guess I yet again underestimated the power and inginuity of my monkey boy. We packed our things up and were getting ready to come inside when we noticed he was gone, I don't know how long he'd been gone. I came inside to get clean up and was ready to hit the pavement to look for him when our doorbell rang. It was our neighbor. He asked if I had a gray cat with an orange collar. I said yes, he said he's over here by my car, and he's dead.
My first thought was that he was hit by a car. We went to go get him, but he wasn't mangled or torn up. His upper body was very stiff, but his hind quarters weren't. He was still warm. I think he got into something poisonous. What else would make his upperbody so stiff so soon? He couldn't have been gone for more than an hour. I hate to think that someone did it intentionally.
My poor baby is gone. I don't think I'd had him a year. He was nawteer than the dickens, but I still loved him.
Funny thing is that he actually let me hold him the night before last. He NEVER would sit still for 2 seconds let alone let me give him lovies, but that night, he just laid there and looked at me. I guess that's the best gift he could have given me before he went to the bridge.
He was taken from me way too soon. He was barely over a year old and it would have been a year this week that I brought him home. I have prayed for God to tell me why he took my little man from me so soon. This hurts so badly. I didn't want to let him out in the first place. :(

i am so, so truly sorry to hear your v.sad news. I do know how much pain you will be feeling just now. I have lost a kitty of a similar age in similar circumstances and it is completely and utterly devastating. I always tell myself that maybe god had his reasons and my wee boy would have otherwise endured some terrible suffering later in life. Who knows....
Many many thoughts and prayers on their way to you xx

Did you take Payton to your vet? I hope you can get some answers...
Cats are such fussy eaters that it is difficult(though not impossible) for them to get poisoned.
Poor nawtee boy...I hope you find out soon.

Poor Payton, and poor Mommy. How terribly sad, you'll be in our thoughts. But at least his last 24 hours on earth were filled with love, joy and a lovely day, and that's what he'll remember.
Scamper merrily at the Rainbow Bridge, Payton.

I first saw this thread when it was still in General and strange, but my first reaction when I saw the title was that he had died somehow. I don't know how I knew that.
I'm so sorry, Debby, and I can only imagine the grief and guilt your going through. {{{hugs}}}
Poor sweet Payton, even though you were naw-tee, your family loved you dearly and will miss you. RIP sweetie. :(

I first saw this thread when it was still in General and strange, but my first reaction when I saw the title was that he had died somehow. I don't know how I knew that.
Maybe because you knew of all the difficulties that I had with him and that his middle name was nawtee.
Thank you so much, everyone for your support. I miss my little man so much. The house seems so quiet without hearing his little bell on his collar. When I heard the bell, I knew trouble wasn't too far behind.
I have to thank PT especially for the many, many pictures I have of him. It's because of this wonderful forum that I felt the need to get the camera out to capture his antics. THANK YOU PT!!
Play hard at the bridge, sweet Payton. Please find my dad, he'll take good care of you and you him. He loved nawtee kitties. You two will be great together.

Oh Deb.... LES here. I am so sorry to read about little Payton. He may have been nawtee, but he was loved! And he knew it!
I am sorry that I am just reading this today, but know that I am sending many prayers and warm wishes to you and your family. I know that you are hurting, but I hope that knowing that all of us here on PT share your grief helps.
Godspeed to the RB little Payton... and play hard. Look for Grandpa! Play together!

Debby....I don't know if this will help....but when my sister and I were teens, "her" cat was a sweet tabby named Squeak.
Squeak did get hit by a car....but managed to reach the yard...there were no apparent signs of damage, but the internal injuries were what did the damage.
The same thing happened to my neighbour last year(she will NOT make her cats indoor kitties! grrr. And don't take that wrong - I KNOW you had taken great care to cat-proof your yard and kept an eye on your babies...like kids, just two seconds, and they can wander off. My neighbour just lets hers wander all day anywhere...)
Maybe that happened to poor Payton.
hugs hugs hugs to you!

Thats a very sad thread.
The First time Your Payton goes out, this happens.
Dont blame yourself as there was no way of predicting that this could happen.
Especially on his first time.
Paytom will be getting his wings Tomorrow Morning and Lunch and Dinner at The Mandarin Buffet will be in Paytons honor.
Walter Paytom will be there to give Payton a Jersey with Payton as Number 1 Cat.
He says dont cry Meowmie.
Im with a lot of Pets and People and I Will See YOU Again.
One Fine Day.

Waler Payton , besides being a Hall Of Fame Running Back, was a Fine Man,whose nickname was Sweetness.
Now he has a Little Payton to be his Companion and go with him, wherever he goes.
Will Little Payton have some stories to tell you about the Football Games that this Gridiron Greats are having, and the Fantastic Banquets where both Paytons will be Honored Guests.
One Fine Day.

Thank you again, everyone for your kind words. I miss him terribly. We haven't moved his dish, and his toys are still scattered all over the house. I keep finding little reminders of how nawtee he was. Today, as I was straightening up, I found one of the baby's socks in the dining room in a box. Payton LOVED socks! He would steal them out of the dryer and take them to play. He also loved boxes. What cat doesn't, right? I also found a stash of things from one of our higher shelves hidden in a corner behind some furniture.
My little boy is still with me in his own, special way.
