Hi,
Smokey is a 10 week old male pitbull. He has his 1st & 2nd Corona and DHLP(right order?) shots. He is starting puppy basics training class next week and those are the shots they require.
Is this enough to start taking him out of the yard?
He's gone on car rides and to my boyfriends (where there are no other dogs). Can I start taking him out to the park and stuff or can is he still at risk for Parvo or anything else? Now, I'm not talking a place where there will be lots of other dogs but just in my neighborhood where there's rarely anyone there at all. (At least until summer! Which is soon! Yay!)

According to the trainer the dog needs to learn new commands 6 different places before he starts to get it, so can I take him places to get those other 3 or 4 places? I didn't get a chance to ask so I thought I'd see if you useful resources can help me out.

Did this make sense??
Thanks!

Be selective where you take the pup and you will be ok. Just make sure you get the rest of the shots when they are due.

Manda...I would keep contact with other dogs to a dead minimum until he gets his second 6-way on the 18th. Good luck...how did you get along with the roommate dog situation??

Things are better, thanks for asking!
They play a lot & usually it's Smokey biting on Pork Chop and P.C. just looking up at me as if he's saying "Okay, this is annoying. Can you get this little thing off me?" But he's not biting back like he was before; it's almost as if he was doing that before to teach Smokey that he was biting too hard. Now P.C. just lets Smokey gnaw away if he has nothing better to do. :)
Smokey still needs to learn that he can't try to steal P.C.'s bone or he'll get snapped at but everything else seems to be going pretty well.
(In fact, he tried to steal one last night and P.C. rolled him, I don't think he tried to bite him or anything, just pounced on him, rolled him over and put his open mouth over Smokey's head. Smokey got scared and started crying and squealing... but it was just him being scared. And about 15 seconds later P.C. came running down the hall to check Smokey out & make sure he was OK. That was pretty cute.)

Hey Manda...I have to ask...what color is Smokey?? Our Smokey is solid black. I don't know if I told you that we have a pit named Smokey too. He was used as a bait dog for fighting and was just about starved and dehydrated to death when he came to live with us.

My Smokey is white with a gray patch on part of his butt, tail and left back leg.

That's him at like 5 weeks in the little picture under my name.

I took him out on his first walk this weekend. He did pretty good. Also took him to the park... He had fun running around with me and trying to trip me. :p
We only stayed about 20 minutes though cuz his attention span was gone and he was just eating grass.

But the best thing happened this morning! I was in the kitchen making my lunch to bring to work & he was in his crate in the living room. He was sleeping when I came down but then I heard a little bark, so I went & let him out. He followed me to the back door, waited while the shutters opened and promtly went to a good spot and went pee! (Before he just would have done it right outside his crate or in it. He never did get the don't go where I sleep thing.) He came right back to the door, I tried to get him to poo (gross?? sorry!) but he didn't want to. Then about 20 minutes later we were up in my room & Smokey was just sitting on the floor staring at me so I asked my boyfriend to go see if maybe he wanted to go outside. Adam said that Smokey followed him down the stairs, to the door, waited while Adam opened it and then went right outside to a good spot and went #2. Yay!! Now, this could have been a fluke but I think it's a good sign!

We're working on him responding to his name (not coming to me, but just paying attention to me) and he's doing good at that, too. It's just nice to see some of our work paying off.

That's it for now.
xoxo
