I just came home to find an empty wrapper laying on the floor that had contained 1/4 pound (or less) of fudge. It was either chocolate peanut butter, or just regular chocolate fudge, NOT dark chocolate. Charlie dry heaved but nothing came up. Jamie has not thrown up yet.

They have been SO BAD lately. We dog proof the house every time before leaving and put EVERYTHING up on the counters in the very back. I had the fudge PUT AWAY on top of the entertainment center! There is no way they could have got it unless Double Oh knocked it down! I don't know what else to do to stop them from getting in to stuff!!

You have no problem with the fudge/chocolate Jessika. You can find sites that give you a toxic weight to treat ratio. I was really surprised when Ginger ate a bunch of Reeses Peanut butter cups... the vet said she would have to eat something ridiculous - like 16 pounds of chocolate before it would be a life threatening concern. Hey, dogs like it!!! :D

Jessika, my Lacey is a counter surfer.She isn't as bad lately due to her knee surguries,it's harder for her to stand on her back legs. Yet yesterday as I turned my back a chunk of my french vanilla cake was gone! :eek: Putting everything way back on the counter or hidden in the microwave :rolleyes: is a way of life here. And yes with a cat in the house you have to be more cautious since they can 'help' the dogs out by throwing things down to them. ;)
Doesn't sound like enough chocolate to really do much harm, there's probably more sugar in the fudge than chocolate. I hope your pups are doing ok this morning. :)

The theobromine in chocolate can not Will kill them.It depends on the weight of the dog, the dogs general health and tolerance and the kind of chocolate ingested.

Milk choc contains 44mg/per ounce.
Semi Sweet contains 150mg/per ounce.
Unsweetened baking chocolate contains 390 mg/per ounce.

To reach toxic levels,a dog would have to ingest.

1 ounce of milk chock per pound of body weight.
1 ounce of semi sweet per 3 ponds of body weight.
1 ounce of bakers per 9 pounds of body weight.

never a good idea, but 4oz of milk chocolate in say a 10lb is just going to make the heart beat raiseand make them a little hyper

I doubt that is going to harm them. My cousins cocker spaniel ate a pound of chocolate once! :eek:

They're both fine this morning. I am well aware of the toxitity of theobromine, which is why I was worried. I know there is MUCH MUCH more sugar in this fudge than chocolate, its the fudge I make at work, and a medium batch has like 14 pounds of sugar, 1.7 pounds of corn syrup, and like.. 7 pounds of chocolate or something like that. So whatever those ratios are, much more chocolate than sugar.

And yeah.. Jamie was super hyper last night.. but I can't tell if it was more than normal, or because we had guests over she hasn't seen in over a month lol

There's no way you can train them while you're gone... but crating them is the most secure thing you can do for them and your home... until/if they grow out of this stage.

Yeah except Jamie barks, loudly, non-stop any time she is ever crated. I'm quite positive my neighbors would call my landlord on us for noise disturbance

I feel your pain. My grandmother makes chocolate-covered peanut butter eggs for Easter. I meant to put the egg in the fridge, but I left it on the table. I am usually so good at dog-proofing! Anyway, I was gone 10-15 minutes tops, and Rosoce had a field day. He destroyed the box it was in too. What a bad boy! There wasn't enough chocolate to hurt him at least. :rolleyes:

When you are not at home, try doing this when you put them in the crate alongwith that put a Kong Chew toy filled with their favorite treat and then they will be involved in something they like. Try practising this while you are still at home, put them in the crate for an hour or so, increase the time everytime. This will make them comfortable with crate.

I had a scare with our puppy Conner (RIP) once ate a hershey bar. I was panicking until I looked it up on line and he would have to eat like 60 milk chocolate bars for it to be fatal. Baking/dark chocolate is a lot more dangerous. A lot of trainers use M&Ms. Personally, I avoid chocolate because it is a laxative. Crating is pretty harsh on a dog that has not grown up that way. I would suggest a room they can share with a nice window view and plenty of toys and comfy nap places.

My 70 lb GSD mix that lives with my parents once ate an entire 1 pound bag of peanut M&M's and was fine! Never had the poos or anything.

I have to crate my dogs 75% of the time when we are not home.
Sierra likes to empty my dirty clothes hamper and drag everything into the living room then tear everything to pieces!! I spray apple bitter all over my house before I leave and they are not in crates. Couches, pillows, blankets, towels, garbage can...etc. It helps sometimes. I just bought a DAP plug in that releases calming hormones, once I get it I'll have to let you know if it helps. ( I bought it on EBAY for $15, they sell in stores for $40) :eek:

Two nights ago Payson ate some of my easter chocolate while he was counter surfing. It wasn't very much only 2 ounces but I was sad that he ate my truffles!

Thought I would give you guys an update on the situation! :)

They were completely fine the next day.. they didn't even have diarrhea or upset tummies at all (which surprised me). We have since then bought a new toy and a big nylabone that they ONLY get while we are away. When we are home, they get put up (but Double Oh steals the stuffed animal and carries it upstairs and hides it in the bathroom... gets annoying lol). Since then they have not tore up or got into anything! I've left toys out for them before but never took them away, or had an "away only" type toy for them.

I had a Kong but left it at my parents' when I moved and they are 4.5 hours away so I can't just run over and pick it up. :( But that is on my must buy list the next time we're in Petsmart

Chocolate is a scary thing for our four legged babies. Nicky my Cocker ate a large amount of Chocolate Chip cookies one morning. Didnt realize it since he cleaned up after himself well. It was a 4 am raid while hubby let them out. He saw after his shower and empty bag on the floor and dropped it into the Garbage. Hubby left for work. Nicky woke me less then a hour later and wanted to go out. Did that 3 times realized he was ill. Had him lay down next to me on my bed and what came up was the cookies. Hence Nicky survived- good thing he ate so much to induce his vomitting. He was real hyper for a while. Called vet monitored him and he survived it. Now I guard anything chocolate. We keep it all in our Microwave. I think one day he will figure how to open that.

:D Snuggles ate a four pack of reese's cups once and she was fine. She has had some chocolate since and I was really scared. I would do some research on it.
