Does your dog have his collar on at all times?

No because when it rubs against their skin they lose their hair in that area, so their collar is only on when it is needed.

my moms 3 always wear collars, Happy and Misty only always where collars now, and only because they are very fancy martingales and they look to good to take off!

No way. Mine only wear collars when they are needed &/or supervised.

Nanook was laying on the floor once years ago when his tags became stuck in the heat vent register cover. He panicked & almost injured himself trying to free himself. Thank god I was there to untangle him. Imagine if it had happened when I was not home & the heat was on?

I've also heard of other horror stories. Granted they are kind of "freak" accidents but still if I have the chance to lessen any accident than I will do so.

YES, always, even the cat! Because we just moved to a new place where I don't know, nor trust, a lot of people yet. Not only that but Charlie is VERY skittish and prone to bolting when the door is open if there is a lot of commotion going on. Not only that, but if I am EVER out walking him and for whatever reason he gets spooked and bolts, chances of him coming back even to me are pretty slim. I am so scared of one of mine running off. Charlie mostly. But Jamie is so friendly, she will walk up to ANYONE, and that scares me too.

Nope! But it depends, Micki and Jack used to rarely wear a collar but I've been experimenting and making collar covers so Micki's has been on quite a bit more :p Shadow ALWAYS wears a collar, but the only reason is she looks weird without it, lol! And the other two usually wear their collars all the time as well.

I understand that there are benifits to wearing collars all the time (like for quick identification purposes) but, I too have heard too many horror stories with dogs and collars...

With my RIP Max, he use to always wear one. Then around age 5 it was choaking him when he would lay on his couch. It was bad enough that he barfed. I made the collar super loose & that didn't help at all. So I just kept it on the door knob for when we went for a walk (but I forgot it 99% of the time). He always had it for car rides, but it was never on him, it would be tossed on the seat, just incase we had to stop to let him tinkle in a strange area (he wouldn't run away but some places have tag rules).

LOL, I love how the responses to this thread are in a yes/no pattern. So to continue the pattern...Nope, my pups do not wear their collars. I don't necessarily fear their collars catching on anything. I just hate how the collar shortens the length of fur around their necks and Giselle, in particular, is sensitive around that area. Plus, I kind of like the look of a nekkid dog :p

YES, he has to. (continuing the pattern!)
He has a habit of bolting out the door nad he's quite the escape artist. He's actually gotten out a few times for about a whole day because he runs, then gets stuck behind fences and can't make his way home. He also has a microchip.
On the otherhand, it does irritate his skin and pulls out his undercoat sometimes. We've tried just about every type of collar there is. I want to get a thick (2") cheap nylon collar from petsmart to see if that is better on him and if it is get him a custom Block Dog collar.
I take it off a lot at night when we're playing or resting and in for the night.

I never used to up until last year sometime but now they always wear them (except for Winston...he's allergic to nylon so he can only where it when we're out) unless they're crated. I don't fear them getting stuck in the heat register as we don't have any right on the floor for them to get to and they are not allowed to play unsupervised, whenever they want to.

My dogs only have theirs on when they're outside (in the yard, on car rides, on walks) since they're supervised 100% of the time. Like lv4dogs, I'm too worried about the collars getting caught on something or each other if they're playing, so it's never on inside the house. Even though they're microchipped, they could be returned to me a lot quicker and a lot easier if they have their collars on. Plus, I'm worried about somebody thinking they don't have a home and taking them in without bothering to check for a microchip.

Yes, for the most part. I take them off when we go to the dog park to avoid getting them dirty, but I put on a cheaper collar without tags in case I need to grab them. I take them off when I put them in a crate to avoid the tags getting stuck. And every night one of the girls sleeps with my parents and they take off the collar to avoid the jingling of the tags. They are with me at all times if we are home or gone somewhere together, so if the tags get caught then I am right there to untangle them. Nova and Luka got caught together once when playing, but other than that they haven't gotten caught on anything.

Frisk has never worn a collar constantly, mainly because the pug in him makes his neck big, so collars come off extremely easy.
Ethan, yes. We signed a contract when we adopted him, and one of the requirements to adopt him is that we have to have a collar on him at all times with his i.d. tag on it.
I voted yes, though, eventhough Frisk rarely wears one.

Yes. I trust my dogs not to run out the door but to put it bluntly, I live with a bunch of idiots. It doesn't matter how mad I get or how often I remind my mom, she still continues to let Kai wander around our front yard unleashed. I trust that they won't bolt out the door.. but once outside, I don't trust them at all. They both have fears that no amount of obedience training will control. So until I move out, they'll have their collars and tags on 24/7.

No, I don't like how it makes her neck look bald lol. She isn't prone to running off and in the case that she did, she'd never let anyone go near her anyways. She is tattooed.

we live out in the middle of no where and our property is fenced in..
so there isnt really the need for a collar

Nope. My dogs only wear their collars when we go somewhere. I hate having to put tags on them because they are so little and the tags are so big, so they only wear them when they have to. Also Buster and Charlie are always curled up in a blanket (Nacey and Nova are sometimes too) and I have see their tags get stuck in the blanket before.

Hair rubs are usually from the wrong type of collar for the coat. Sonny has worn a flat collar for 15 years and has not problems, while his sister had a rolled collar and had a bald spot on her neck.

Beanie keeps his on 24/7. Gracie gets hers taken off when she comes in the house. i keep it off so it doesn't rub off the hairs on her neck.

No, I don't. :) I also like seeing them without collars, when they're hanging out in the house it's kind of pointless to have a collar on. They also don't wear collars while playing frisbee/ball/flyball, because the tags are a hazard and I don't want feet to get caught when they're playing... they do wear harnesses, though.
