egg shells...?

I've heard that egg shells are good for dogs.Mine get a raw egg once a week,but i dont usually give them the shell. What are egg shells good for?Like their nutritional value.and if they have to be smashed,or just given in peices. I've given them a peice of it before and they ate it,so i guess they like it,lol.

I'm pretty sure it only provides calcium. I give Nova and Luka whole eggs, cracked but not broken and with the contents still inside. They eat it just fine. Mandy won't eat the shell unless if I grind it which is too much work for me so I just let her skip it. She gets enough calcium in her diet already. Buck had his first shell last night and he played with it for a few minutes and then finally ate it lol.

Raw egg yolks and whites by themselves do not contain the ideal 1:1 - 2:1 calcium/phosphorous ratio. In order to obtain the proper ratios, the ideal method of feeding would be to feed the egg whole, shell and all. Just crack an egg into your dog's bowl and they usually gobble up everything by themselves. If not, you can back the egg shells in a 325F oven for 5-10 minutes or until brittle. Let them cool for a few minutes and then grind them into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle or blender. You can be creative. I've heard of some people using a hammer in desperate times :D
