They're just making up names for mixed breeds. The only thing wrong with it is breeding more of them on purpose. I think we should all go down to our local shelters and make up "designer" names for each of the mixed breeds there, and see if they get adopted more quickly!

Actually, some of the shelters in my area of Cali have had some luck advertsising Puggles, Maltipoos, Ori-peis, etc... and for ones that aren't technically designers yet, they'll make up cutesy names for adoption days (sorta like the designer dog breeders do for selling) and they attract more attention, if nothing else.
