View Full Version : Vomiting & slow digestion ? kinda urgent

I know dog health but this kinda urgent & more folks look here.
My friend just called, the one whos staying with me, Nanook won't stop puking. About 10 piles in 10 minutes.
We did run out of his pain meds so I gave him buffered asprin this am. I checked with the vet yesterday & they said it's ok to give him asprin till I can get back there for more meds. He's never had a problem with asprin before & he's had it often but it has been 2-3 months since he's had it last.
Some of his vomit has whole dog food in it. He ate at 6 this morning and I know he had none since then. Has anyone heard of a dog vomiting up whole dog food almost 9 hours later? Or what would cause that?
My vets in surgery and will call back in a little while.

It sounds like indigestion.
Maybe the meds he is on are bothering him.
OH God I hope it's nothing.

I know that this does not really answer your question, dog vomiting (http://www.geocities.com/petsburgh/zoo/1224/vomit.html?200624) , but it was the best I could do quickly.

I'd get him to the vet asap.
Give him nothing in meantime, not even water. His system needs to settle down. There are a number of things that could cause his symptoms--some of them scary, some of them nothing serious. When Paxil puked non-stop, she had pancreatitis. A blockage could cause it, bloat could cause it, he may just not be feeling well today. Vomitting is a symptom of many things.
There's no chance he got into something toxic, is there?
I hope it's nothing serious! All paws crossed for Nanook!

Nope NO chance of anything toxic.
The thing that worries me most is that the food is stsill whole, I've never heard of such a thing.
My friend just called me back, he hasn't vomited in the last 5 minutes but he's pacing like crazy.

I think he needs to go to the vet asap.
It does sound like a blockage too.
If it was bloat, wouldn't he be crying in pain?

his tummy is normal size and still soft, so I doubt its bloat but I can't be sure as I am not there. I work 45 minutes away from home.
He's not crying or anything though but seems very uneasy.
I just called my dad (my boss) to see if I can leave, he's not answering any of his phones. If I don't hear from him soon I am just leaving.

Not neccessarily. Some dogs hide pain very well. Northern breeds are particularly good at hiding pain--they are big drama queens when nothing is wrong and silent when something is!
Here's a list of bloat symptoms:

I wouldn't be particularly concerned about it looking pretty much the same as when it went in. But there are other indicators that he may have pain or a blockage. Can she take him to the vet for you?

Let the dog eat some fresh gras outside. They prefer some wetter long grasses. It settles their stomach and helps with digestion. Dogs naturally know what kind of grasses to avoid if your concerned.
I also would avoid the aspirin. It could irratate the stomach somewhat if it isn't coated aspirin. You can also try some pepto bismal if it is stomach upset.
I would suspect side effects from not taking regular medication, a blockage, or just a change in environment. Keep an eye on the food too. Give some canned food and make sure the dry dog food is good. Canned food is higher in calories and may help keep his strength up till this passes.

Oh no, I hope he's ok.. It might be the fact that he's not on his meds & its a reaction to that.. I wish I had asked for your phone # earlier, so I could call to see how hes doing, as I have free calling in all of canada & all of the usa, all day any day, for any amount of time... PLEASE keep us posted!!

I'm sending swift thoughts and prayers to you and precious Nanook, Sue. Please keep us posted as soon as possible. Please be okay Nanook!! :(
For what it's worth; Delilah vomited up whole food two times over the last few years. It was after 5 or 6 hours after she ate. She only did it one time each time so I didn't get too concerned. She was ok afterwards. Of course Nanook's vomiting so much is not the same thing. I think the vet could help you get the answers you need. (((HUGS)))

I'm sure he has all his shots :) He's been having some health problems lately, at some of which are due to his age (he's 15). ;)

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone, again I appreciate them so very much!
And thanks Gina & Jess for posting an update for me.
That was quite the scare though. He vomited a lot, his gums were almost black & he was running a fever. After giving him some meds & witholding food & water for a few hours he was doing well.
Nanook is doing good now but the vet thinks it may be a liver problem. He will be going to the vet Tuesday for some more advanced bloodwork. I'll post an update then.

Also glad to hear Nanook's doing better. He looks a lot like my other brother's dog, Nilla, and I hate to hear when Nanook's under the weather more than usual old age.
