Easter Bunny Evicted From St. Paul City Hall
POSTED: 9:44 am EST March 23, 2006
ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Easter Bunny has been banished from City Hall in St. Paul.
A toy rabbit, pastel-colored eggs and a sign with the words "Happy Easter" were removed from the lobby of the City Council offices, because of concerns they might offend non-Christians.
A council secretary had put up the decorations. They were not bought with city money.
St. Paul's human rights director, Tyrone Terrill, asked that the decorations be removed, saying they could be offensive to non-Christians.
But City Council member Dave Thune said removing the decorations went too far -- and he wonders why they can't celebrate spring with "bunnies and fake grass."

:) Sara! I have no problems with taking away the Easter bunny and Santa. They detract from the real reason for the holidays. :)

Political correctness OVERKILL!!! How about just replacing the "Happy Easter" sign with a "Happy Spring" sign and leave the decorations??? Takes the religion right out of it and offends no one.

Rabbits and colored eggs are not religious symbols. No religion that
I've ever heard of. It's a celebration of new life. A renewal of all living
things.

I don't really see why that's offensive, I know plenty of non-Christians who still celebrate Easter Sunday, maybe not religiously but certainly in the form of having a good time and eating easter eggs! That is going too far in trying to be politically correct.

The bunnies wern't offensive to me, but their removal was!!
I'm anti religious (my choice & I have no issus with other people beliefs & will partake in their activities if invited).
I see easter, xmas, ect. as days to get to gether to have fun with the family & its something to look forward too.

Don't people have other things to worry about other than someone putting a Happy Easter sign out? Ridiculous! It just goes to show how far this country has sunk spiritually and morally. :(

Exactly. Rabbits, eggs, and other symbols of fertility are Easter symbols that pre-date Christianty from when Easter was still as celebration of the goddess.
Most people don't know (or care) where the Easter Bunny came from. However, it seems silly that it should offend the non-Christians when it was from the non-Christians it came from!

Actually, they are. They originated as pagan fertility symbols. Other symbols co-opted by Chrisitians are oxen, eagles, snakes, lions, deer, sheep, pelicans, salmon, and...mousetraps! (bet you didn't know that one!) should we ban mousetraps? :D
There are so many symbols used by so many religions for so many different reasons, it seems quite pointless to ban them. Perhaps we need to ban Political correctness, or at least rein it in a little!

I have a story on my Pagan calendar about where the legend of the Easter Bunny came from if anyone is interested. :)

That's interesting......I knew about all the symbols except for mousetraps :) I don't suppose I would have guessed they were a symbol for anything other than having mice in the walls ;)
