Why, oh why do they do this?!?!?!?! I took the dogs for their morning "jaunt" through the park this am and I found some new paths to walk on. Well, of course the dogs run ahead of me, becuase I'm SO SLOW.....especially with my ankle being sore.
I come around the corner into a clearing and Jack is rolling in something that smells worse than rotten potatoes and looks like sewage!! I said "Stop that Jack" and I must have startled him because he rolled over backwards and splashed right into an even BIGGER puddle of it!
He smelled SO BAD!! The whole house stinks! I left the window open hoping to air it out a little. I wouldn't even let Duncan walk next to him on the way home. Thank God Duncan is too busy running around to stop, drop and roll!!

Hello,
I cannot be much help as to an answer to your question. I can only offer my sympathy. My dog does it too. Here my dog is all clean, groomed, fluffy and rolling in a disgusting something. I dont know why they do it, but itsn't it frustrating?

Poor Jennifer!! Have I been there!:D Up here, the beach offers Star and Cody endless opportunities for "deadly" encounters! Their favorites are dead seagulls!! Yuck. They run off, and in the distance, I see legs paddling the air, bodies rolling back and forth in glee; no mistaking what they're up to!! One time the smell was soooo bad, that even with all of the windows, back hatch and sunroof open, the car smelled so bad I couldn't stand it!! I had to hold my breath all the way home. It took several baths to get rid of the smell!!! I read somewhere that they do this to cover their "catch" with their scent to prevent other perspective "rollers" from claiming it! I feel you pain Jennifer!!:D

Awww. I remember when me and my friend used to walk this older ladies dog for her all the time, and we took the dog to the park and she had this thing with rolling in poo..we would have to wash her cause we didn't want to take herback to her owner like that..then this gardener next door was like cursing at us for it or something...man he was a little insane i think..he scared the hell out of us lol..I always kinda wondered why she did that..

Sadie rolls in stuff too - dead stuff, some kind of animal feces, and completely unidentifiable stuff. I've learned to recognize the look on her face right before she takes the dive so I am able to prevent it most of the time.
Theories I've heard are: to hide her own smell I guess to hunt better and/or to cover herself with the smell of her discovery so she can bring it back to the pack and "tell" them what she found.
I hate the smells she finds but the happiness it brings her keeps me from getting mad. Sadie gets this look of pride and accomplishment on days she gets dirtiest. She'll sit in the back seat of the car tall and alert, hair wet and grimy with stink, sticking straight out. I just cover my back seat in vinyl and let her enjoy the ride, then immediately lead her to the tub when we get home :). Her posture for the tub - tail between legs, head hung low :(.

That's funny Jenn. Especially since that is how Jack was yesterday...as happy as a dog can be on the way home, head and tail high...Like he was the King of the World! I think by the time my roommate and I got home last night though, he was sick of his own smell!! The house still stinks by the way! My roommate had to change her sheets and give him 2 baths! We had every smelly candle in the house going last night!:) :p
Like I said, thank God Duncan hasn't discovered the joys of rolling yet! And hopefully never will! He can't stop running!!!
