Ralph has been having a terrible time vomiting not too long after eating. He went to the vet on Monday and spend the day there. When he was weighed, he had lost a half pound since 2/2/06. And he cleans the plates! Of course, the nurse(me)suspected the WORSE. I asked the vet to draw a T4 and a " free " T4. The T4 results showed Ralph was in the " gray " zone: for a cat of Ralph's age and showing some symptoms of hyperthyroidism. The " free " T4 came back today. The range goes to 50, Ralph is 53. He was started on Tapazole 2.5 mg twice a day. To be rechecked in 3 weeks. His kidney functions are good, so that is a relief!
Ralph ate well for supper and so far, has kept it down!!! I am hoping that things will settle down for Ralph. He has had a rough time since Christmas Eve!!
PS: Tina Peepers has taken over Ralph's Grainger box. At the hospital today, I found him a new box(Boise paper company). Put some comfy pads in and in went Ralph!!

I'm sorry to hear that Ralph has been feeling poorly again ... but relieved that he got some good reports! Maybe he will have a new comfy bed of his very own soon! ;) :D
Give him a kissie for me!

Yes, good to at least know what you are dealing with here. Take heart, Cleo is much improved since she started on Neomercasol 5 months ago. Of course, getting the thyroid under control unmasked the kidney condition and showed it to be much worse than we had thought, when bloods were re-checked. Hopefully it's just thyroid for Ralph though
Don't forget to get the new box consecrated ;)

I was so happy that Ralph had not womited since Tuesday. When I came home from work this afternoon, his brand new box was covered with his breakfast!!! Everything went into the wash, now in the dryer. I cleaned up what little was on the box. POOR Ralph!!! He is so hungry!!! Now to start all over with supper!! The Orangeman thanks you all for your kind words and well wishes!

Ralph's BUN and creatinine are normal, the vet is happy there is no evidence of kidney disease at this time. And when he vomits, 100cc's of sub q fluids help to prevent Ralph from getting dehydrated(Ralph does not think it is good to have a nurse for a Mom!).

Maybe the latest "gift" was from a bolt'n'barf episode. Pink Nose does that once in awhile. I hope he feels better, and is a good boy about taking his pills.

Thanks for all the great and helpful posts!!! So far(I don't want to jinx things), Ralph has kept down his supper. I pray that the Tapazle is kicking in and there will be NO surprises when I get home from work!! Ralph has improves greatly in pill taking!! In the past he was a moving target! I NEVER saw a cat move their head that FAST!!!

Barry and I had gone to PA this morning. Whenwe got home around 2, I noticed that Ralph had thrown up.
Kirsten!! I managed to find a LARGER Grainger box for Ralphie at work on Friday! I have made it nice amd comfy for him and it is right by the heater vent so it will be a warm retreat for him!!
Thanks for all your well wishes!!

Poor Ralph. Have you tried some homoeopathic nux vomica or some Bach flowers Rescue Remedy to allay the nausea?

TopCat3, thanks for your suggestion. Yes, we did give Ralph some Nux. What I found to be really helpful is the Bach Rescue Remedy. Several drops to his ears seems to help. Today, Ralph is looking good, getting into things, wants attention, and keeps walking across the computer. So far, no vomiting since Sunday!!!!!
