Skuld is special because he's a tarantula that belongs to an arachnophobic owner. She bought him to help her get over her arachnophobia. He was a spur-of-the-moment buy at the local petshop for $15.
But his name is what also makes him so special. Skuld is a name that comes from Norse mythology. In the tree of life, called the Yggdrasil, there was the Weaver of Fate, which is represented by a spider. The Norns were the three goddess that spun the thread of life while the Weaver spun the web. There were three Norns to guard each the past, present, and future. Urd guards the past, Verthandi guards the present, and Skuld guards the future. It is said that if you walk in the spirit world and come upon them you can learn of your own past, present, or future depending upon the maiden you choose to talk to. They will lead you down your thread in the web of fate. Skuld, whose weavings began the thread of life, was often shown draped in diaphonous veils or cloaks that hid her true appearance.
Hopefully my friend, with the help of this spider, will have a brighter, less fearful future after working with Skuld and won't be so afraid of spiders anymore. Skuld is calm and steady, and not at all skittish, so his personality is perfect for this important task!
