Peter the Mexican Red-Knee Tarantula, the Pet of the Day
Name: Peter
Age: Three years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Mexican Red-Knee Tarantula
Home: Dallas, Texas, USA

This is my pet, Peter. Peter is a Mexican Red-Knee Tarantula (Brachypelma Smithi) He is approximately three years old, and we live in Dallas, Texas.

Peter stays with me on my desk at my office all the time. He is about 6" in diameter, and has a 14"(L) X 8"(W) X 7"(H) tank (5.5 Gallon).

Everyone here at my office has a betta fish, because they are quiet friendly pets, but because I am the Network Administrator here, I am reluctant to keep a bowl of water next to the server equipment. So I got Peter to be a substitute.

Peter is an excellent companion, and I tell everyone that he is the company "web"-master. He is basically a pet rock, he rarely moves unless he is bothered, or hungry. I talk to him often, but I don't three crickets a week, so it only costs about $1.50 per month to feed him.

I rarely hold him, because Peter usually likes to be left alone, and I wouldn't want to damage the fine hairs on his body or anything. We respect each other's space. I would definitely recommend a tarantula to anyone that wants a small, quiet "smell-free" pet that doesn't cost a lot, and can live for almost 30 years.
