Sparkles the Fish is a beautiful green-blue betta with a black face. He's a large betta, measuring about three inches long excluding finnage. Sparkles is both smart and ferocious. I've trained him to associate three quick taps on the bowl with feeding time. He attacks his food with such gusto that he often jumps through the water's surface, and he loves to push around the large rocks and shells on his bowl's floor, creating loud tinkling sounds in the middle of the night.
Perhaps the most special thing about Sparkles is his incredible hardiness - during a week-long blackout in NC last year caused by an ice-storm, Sparkles managed to survive the cold just as well as the humans did (and unfortunately much better than three of my other bettas, who died during the blackout). Sparkles lives in a tinted crystal bowl, because he seems to like being in the direct sunlight, but doesn't like the glare. If Sparkles were human, he would most certainly be a tough-talking drag queen, who was never without stylish tinted sunglasses, and not to be messed with!
