This is Henny, one of my chickens. She is almost five months old. I live in the southeast corner of Kansas, called Pittsburg. The chicks were colored black with a yellow dot on their heads. They were adorable. I ordered them online and picked them up at the post office. I guess the post office does it all the time in the springtime. I paid for 15, but they sent me 17, just in case. I kept them under a warming light until they all were feathered out. I chose this breed called Dominique, or they are nicknamed "dominickers" because I found a picture of my maternal grandmother feeding a flock of chickens from about the 1920s on her farm in St Paul, Kansas. I took the picture to my local feed store, and the man working there said that the chickens in my Grandma's flock were a breed called Dominique. I looked up the characteristics of this breed, and it said they are good layers and are generally calm and friendly.
I chose to have my chicks to all be female, though that costs you a little bit extra. I give them hen feed from the feed store, and I pick grass for them, they love it! I also give them anything like stale bread, wilted lettuce, and strawberry tops. Pretty much they are happy with these tidbits of food. I want to build them a nice pen that will keep out predators, so they can get outside if they wish. My other idea is to maybe take a couple to the local fair and enter them in an open class, but we will see. I have never shown a chicken so I will have to read up on that subject first. They are very hard for me to tell apart, as their markings are all so similar. But Henny here is the friendliest, and calmest, and practically posed for her photo. The girls all look similar, of course, and not all have names. They cluck at each other, and they really use their feet to shift through the straw/floor of the coop, just to make sure they haven't missed any bug or bit of food that might be there.
They are pretty good at trusting me and not getting too excited when I come into their coop, and when my six-year-old pours their food out for them, they totally trust him more and eat while he fills their bowls, maybe since he is smaller? But we love Henny, Clucky and them all.
This picture is of my maternal grandmother Nellie Judge Vitt with her flock of Dominique chickens. The photo was taken by my Grandpa George. This picture is why I chose the breed of chickens as my own flock, and as you can see, Henny looks just like those chickens way back then!
