Ares was rescued from a terrible situation. His "owner" tied him on a 20-foot rope to a trailer with no food, water, or shelter. Desperate for water in the July heat, he pulled the tractor into a creek. Upon discovering where his tractor was, he beat the baby horse in the head with a metal pipe. The man was reported*, and Ares was removed from the premises by local animal control. They gave him the name "Ares" because even though he was frail and injured, he put up a fight to be caught and rescued. He was named after the Greek God of War.
But Ares's story isn't the only thing that makes him special. Mine does too. Not long after bringing him home, I left a two-year abusive relationship, after battling depression through much of it. I began focusing my energy on working with Ares. For hours a day, I would simply stand and talk to him, at first. Then he let me pet him, then, I lead him. I gained his trust. All that time, I thought I was training a horse. But no, he was teaching me.
That's why my Ares is so special to me.
*As a follow-up, the man who abused him had all his animals taken away, and is barred from owning animals ever again.
