I'd had birds for around 20 years when in December 2012, I walked into the store for supplies. I never imagined I'd be getting another bird then... I walked over to the budgie cage and saw the most beautiful budgie I've ever seen! His colors really caught my eye. He is a mutation called recessive pied, and happens to be a goldenface. His patches of both bright and light yellow with a turquoise belly was such a stunning color that he had me mesmerized! I'd had several parrots and finches before, but never a budgie. To be honest, I never even considered one until I saw Twigs.
Well, that was it. All day I couldn't get him off my mind. I went home and told my husband, "I think I need this little guy." He agreed and came to the store with me to get him. After all, it was right before Christmas! He picked out a mostly white budgie who looked like a little snowy owl. Pix and Twigs were both DNA'd male. They became best friends quickly, though my Twigs was always the boss! Unfortunately Pix was plagued with genetic problems and passed away at about a year old.
Twigs has adjusted to life by himself, although his cage is in the room with the parrots. Supervised, he is allowed to come out to fly in the room and play with the parrots for several hours each night. He has a blast playing with their toys and eating their food, even though he is so tiny. Twigs never became hand tame, although he will step up on my finger to come out of his cage. He also obeys vocal commands. He's very smart. When it's time for him to say goodnight and go home, I only have to gently sweep my hand to shoo him out of the parrot cage where he likes to play, and say "Twigs, go home ... Twigs, in" and he will fly to his cage and go inside for me to lock the door and cover him for the night. Twigs is such a good boy. I'm glad I happened upon him that day, otherwise I would never have known what a joy it is to keep the cutest, funniest little parakeet.
