Pet of the Day
Today's Pet of the Day
Fluke the North American House Sparrow, the Pet of the Day
Name: Fluke
Age: Eight months old
Gender: Female
Kind: North American House Sparrow
Home: Denver, Colorado, USA
This is Fluke. She is a North American House Sparrow. I found her on the street when she was a tiny pinky and raised her. She was thrown out of the nest because of a mutation that made her foot clubbed (hence the name Fluke, her full name is Darwin's Fluke). I had to feed her every 15-30 minutes for the first couple months, which means I had to take her everywhere with me. She even went to work at my bar. The wild bird rehabilitation center told me to feed her canned puppy chow because sparrows are carnivorous.

Now that she's grown she mostly eats millet and suet, but she also loves carrots (cooked and raw) and an occasional nibble of chicken. She is a wonderful alarm clock and she loves riding around on my shoulder when I go out. She sleeps in a cage, but spends most of the day hopping and fluttering around the house (because of her mutation, she also cannot fly). She is a very special little friend.
