Zig is a male Natural Winter White Dwarf hamster. Zig tended to bite at first, but now is mostly tame. I had to wear leather gloves for a while when handling him. As long as he can't smell food on my hands or he doesn't feel threatened when I attempt to pick him up he doesn't bite.
Zig was originally part of a pair, Zig and Zag, who were supposed to both be males, but three weeks later Zag had babies - whoops! Zig is very territorial and used to share his habitat nicely with my (definitely male) Pearl Winter White, Snow. But Snow was having problems with hair loss on top of his head, so I had to separate them. Snow's hair grew back and he does just fine now in his own habitat.
Zig showed just a slight lightening of his fur this past winter. He is pretty independent and only allows me to hold him for a brief time and must me cupped in my hands to feel secure. Zig has plenty of room to run around and several places to hide or peek out of his home. Zig mostly hides in his itty bitty igloo during the daytime. He does like to stand up on his hind legs and give a quick look out; although, it is my understanding that these dwarf hamsters have poor eyesight.
