Jade isn't our first budgie, or even our first bird! What makes him unique, to us at least, is that it took the entire eight years that we have had him to get him to finally trust us and open up! He's the first bird we've had who really, truly wanted nothing to do with humans.
We tried everything, from gentle coaxing with some millet, to literally just leaving the cage open (but supervised, of course). Nothing worked. He was terrified of everything and anything that moved, made noise, or came within 3 feet of his cage. So, we spent the last eight years making sure he was always fed, clean, and watered. Toys were offered, but he really didn't care for them. We would talk to him whenever we were in the area. We never wanted to force him into doing anything that he didn't want to do, so we just settled in and let him take his time.
Finally, this year, he started inching closer when we'd talk to him. He'd greet us back as we walked into the room. Eventually, he started jumping to the front of his cage whenever he'd see us (the door was still a "bad zone" for him, though). I'm still not sure what exactly changed, but one day about two months ago, he finally and tentatively hopped onto my finger... and that was it!
He's been utterly infatuated with coming out since then, and there's no stopping him once that door is opened in the morning! He no longer bites if a finger is offered, and he just loves perching on our shoulders, and my dual monitors. The change has been amazing; what was once an aloof, terrified bird is now an affectionate, curious little fellow who wants nothing more than to spend as much time with his humans as possible.
