This is Miranda, my big sister. I like to think of her that way, since she is twice my age and I grew up on her mother's back with her by our side. It all started when my mom accidentally bought a pregnant mare named Lois. Lois had Miranda, and the two have been the family's kids long before I was born. I was raised on Lois, because Miranda was too unpredictable for my age for a long time.
While Lois was a gentle, sensible horse who knew how to stay out of trouble, Miranda earned nick-names like 'Flying Fruitcake' and 'Hot-sauce-red Ferrari' for a reason. In her younger days she would pester horses twice her size, and dump my parents on the ground, and generally be a brat. She still can be. Whatever trainer my parents hired for her sucked. They have many hilarious stories of her antics. She might as well be a feral horse.
After Lois passed on, at 34 years, Miranda and I were both shattered. It took a long time to get used to life without dear old Lois. But in the process we bonded better, and I learned to ride her. For years we would go on long trail rides by ourselves. I would always ride bareback, and she would always spook at something, and yet I almost never fell.
Miranda is still alive and very healthy, despite her whopping 32 years. Even in her old age, she can often be very obnoxious. I still ride her once in a while, or just sit on her back while she does whatever she wants. She sets the terms these days. If I don't get off when she wants, I get thrown off. Miranda loves carrots, and face rubs, and looks like woolly mammoth in the winter and sheds carpets in the spring. We absolutely adore her.
