Leroy wandered into the back yard about six years ago while a fence was being put up. He was friendly and decided to stay. We found out what kind of tortoise he was and what he ate and how to care for him. We figured he must have been someone's pet at one point, as he is so friendly and of course his species is native to Saharan Africa, not Florida. He loves his veggies and is very fond of pumpkin, hence the messy chin. Leroy moves a bit faster when it's hot out.
He likes people and loves to have his neck scratched. He comes when called and has a smile on his face and is great for stress relief, just sitting around with him and letting your mind wander.
He also likes the color red. We don't know why but he does. Put something red down and he makes a beeline for it. He has a shelter next to the porch and a small heat lamp for colder weather but then, we're in Florida! Not too much in the way of real cold weather.
He's easy to care for, is quiet, loves to see you and unlike a human child, doesn't ask for the keys to the jeep. We figure he weighs in at around 100 pounds and are going to work on figuring out his age! We love him!
