Hi! My name is Phoebe, and I am a Dutch Welsummer. My hatchday was February the 9th, 2017, so I'm one year old! Chickens like me are sometimes also called Chocolate Eggers, because some of us lay eggs such a dark brown they look like chocolate. Some shells are so dark that people dry then out and grind them up to make pigment for paintings, so we Welsummers are very artistic birds. My human mommy says she can always tell when I have been in the house!
The last photo of me under the pink blanket is when I first came to my Forever Home. I was very shy, and everything seemed very scary, so I mostly stayed close to my new adopted mommy. As you can see I spent a lot of time helping her with the computer. But as I got older I became much braver. I began to play silly tricks. Here I am sneaking up on Dweezil. She's trying to rest on the bed, and there I am coming to scare her! Hee hee! Lots of people like to keep chickens like me as pets, because we are very pretty, and very quiet. I'm definitely pretty but I can be looouuud! When I lay an egg, I tell the whole world! After all, eggs as pretty as mine need to be seen!
My feathers are pretty too, and Mommy uses them in her art. But don't worry! She doesn't pull them! She waits until I molt them naturally and gathers them up, and makes jewelry with them, so I get to carry on my artistic tradition. I am also very smart. I know how to knock to be allowed to come into the house to use my nesting box to lay an egg. I know my name and come when my Mommy calls ... unless there is a yummy bug or worm... and I know "Step up", which is what people teach parrots to get them to step onto their hand. But Mommy doesn't say "Step up", she says "Little feet!" and I give her my little feet! I'm a very special clever birdie. Mommy says "Modest, too." Well of course I'm modest, I'm a Welsummer, and we are just the best birds ever!
