Schubert the Abyssinian Cavy (Guinea Pig), the Pet of the Day
Name: Schubert
Age: Adult (unknown)
Gender: Male
Kind: Abyssinian Cavy (Guinea Pig)
Home: Illinois, USA

March is "Adopt a Homeless Guinea Pig" month and that's when we adopted Schubert from the Humane Society. He was shy, nervous, the only guinea pig without a cage mate and we knew he was just waiting for us! His previous family gave him an unimaginative name and we changed it to Schubert because a cavy with his fancy hairdo needs a fancy name (like the famous composer)!

Adult Schubert was alarmingly too thin when we adopted him (under two pounds), but, in less than three months, his weight is up to two pounds, 11 ounces! He enjoys a great diet of Oxbow food, hay, fresh veggies, and a weekly treat of Oxbow's Critical Care for extra nutrition. Schubert loves water and drinks 6 to 7 oz. daily.

Schubert's favorite veggies are celery, green leaf lettuce and baby carrots but he enjoys broccoli, peppers, and a variety of healthy veggies.

Our wonderful friend Donna, surprised us by crocheting Schubert's "twin" doll, which is so adorable - and awesome for photo ops! I always do a double take every I see Schubert's darling twin doll!

Schubert is very inquisitive, active, loves to run around his cage, throw around his toys, and often jumps up on his hind legs to get our attention when he wants veggies. Schubert only whistled twice after adopting him; he stopped whistling because he was instantly spoiled (like all pets should be) and knows he doesn't have to whistle to get his favorite veggies. He is a bit squirmy when posing for photos but that just adds to our fun interaction.

When Schubert wakes up from a nap, stretches and walks slowly out of his house, he looks like a caterpillar! He loves a head and shoulder massage and receiving this will stop him in his tracks for quite a while. His fur is so soft and, thankfully, he feels hearty now (he felt bony when we adopted him). Schubert will blissfully collapse on my lap on his side when getting a massage, which is precious. Then, after a couple minutes, he is up and ready to go and explore!

Each of our precious adopted guinea pigs have had distinct and different personalities and all of them have added so much joy to our household. Our motto (www.guineapigsrfun.net) is, "We never met a cavy we didn't like." We try to encourage everyone to research animals nutritional/medical/safety needs before adding any pet to their household and to please "opt to adopt" from animal shelters. Schubert is finally receiving the daily TLC he deserves and our goal is that every homeless pet (small or big) will be as lucky as Schubert!
