I wanted a chinchilla for as long as I can remember. The first time I saw one, I was infatuated with it and once I felt how soft they were, I hoped that one day I would have a chinchilla of my own. After college, getting married, buying a house and starting a family, it didn't seem like a chinchilla was in my future.
Several years ago, fate stepped in. I was browsing the local SPCA's website just to look at the pictures of the animals that they had available for adoption ... I was not looking to add another pet to the family. I scrolled down and stopped on a gorgeous chinchilla! She was about a year old, silvery grey (known as mosaic coloring in the chinchilla world), and one of the most beautiful animals I had ever seen. I knew I had to have her. I set the wheels in motion, got the okay from my awesome husband, and went to the SPCA on my lunch break to meet her. It was love at first sight and I adopted her on the spot!
Luna settled in to be a wonderful addition to our family. We have a large cage for her, that is tall enough to allow her to jump and climb and get plenty of exercise. She loves to be scritched under her chin and will run to the side of her cage looking for attention or a stick to chew on anytime one of us walks by. When I put my arm into the cage, she climbs all over me like I am her personal jungle gym. She is quite affectionate and will give me whisker kisses on the nose and cheeks.
Her diet consists of timothy hay and alfalfa pellets. Chinchillas have very sensitive digestive systems, so sugary or fatty treats can be harmful to them. Fresh or dried fruits and vegetables can also cause them to bloat. They love to chew, so the right wooden sticks make great healthy treats. Luna's absolute favorite treat is dried rose petals and she goes crazy as soon as one of us picks up the bag! I love her very much.
