Sans is a large male Carribean hermit crab that loves to hang out with me. He never pinches, and has learned the command 'Let go', usually used when he decides to hug my fingers. He also knows my voice, coming out when he hears me talking to him. It's up for debate if he knows his name, as he responds to multiple words like they're his name. He enjoys eating only the front half of mealworms, and not sharing the uneaten parts. When music is played near him, he 'dances', bopping his antennae in rhythm with the music.
I got Sans over a year and a half ago, early in the school year. He came from a pet store on a beach only a few hours away from me. I gave him to my science teacher, where he stayed until the end of the school year with his friends Shy Guy, Houdini, Sandy, Spike, Smiley, and Dora. Sans grew attached to me, going so far as to hang onto my clothes so he could come home with me.
During the year, I never saw more than three hermit crabs molting. Shy Guy molted, along with Dora and Sandy. Dora and Shy Guy died after my math teacher's son wouldn't leave any of the hermit crabs alone.
At graduation, my science teacher gave him back to me as a gift. A couple days later, we got his baby sister Petra, the one seen climbing with him. (She looks huge in that picture, but she's about a fifth of his size.) Sans and Petra became good friends, often heard squeaking happily at each other. Around Christmas time this past year, my old science teacher gave me the rest of the hermit crabs in the tank. When I got them, I could tell the kid had been back to terrorizing them, as Houdini is missing a leg and Smiley is acting very aggressive. Sans seems to be a calming influence on them, as all four new hermits are more relaxed than when they first came home.
A few weeks ago, Sans decided he wanted to stay with me after I'd picked him up. It was around dinner time, so we decided to allow him to roam on the table. We chopped him some cucumber and tomato, placing it in a shallow lid. Almost instantly, he ran over to the lid and started munching on his cucumber before returning to his exploring. This encounter led to my first ever picture of food.
Lately, Sans had the chance to accompany me to my college and meet my classmates. He absolutely loved it. He was chirping and squeaking constantly as if greeting all the new people. My teacher was so enthralled with him, he actually is invited to return to class when it gets warm enough outside for him.
I know hermit crabs are an unorthodox pet, but I'll be happy knowing more people know about Sans.
