Hi! My name is Rooibos, and I'm a rooster! That's a boy-chicken. I was hatched on a farm, and that bottom photo is me as a baby, and with my chicken-mommy. Boy I really had big feet as a baby, didn't I? I was a very good baby and very calm. Sadly my chicken-mommy died, so I was fostered by a human-mommy.
I have a sister, too! Her name is Sugar-Star. She doesn't live with us right now, but she will be coming to stay with us soon. That's me having breakfast with her. Oh, and another photo of us posing together. I was getting big enough that I was starting to crow by then. Because I was a boy chicken, the farm didn't want me because boy chickens don't lay eggs. So I went to live with my human-mommy, and a new chicken family!
In the group photo, there's Phoebe and Penny in the foreground, then Marley and Phoenix, and there's Dweezil, she's a big black hen. She kinda scares me. That's me on the right, I'm the mostly white one. I'm about three months old there, and getting big. But I still liked to stay close to my adopted human-mommy. There I am taking a nap in the grass. It was so nice and warm. I used to like to sleep on my side with my toes all curled and my beak in my neck feathers. Now I'm all grown up, and there I am with my human-mommy! I'm a big boy now, but I'm still her very good boy. She tells me all the time what a nice rooster I am, and I don't bite or chase little kids like some roosters do. Can you imagine?!
Mommy says she's very glad I'm her rooster. I'm glad I'm her rooster, too. I have friends and a warm bed to sleep in at night. I'm only eight months old but I have a lot of responsibilities! I know how to make sure all the hens stay safe, and how to find them nice things to eat, and to look out for hawks, and to make sure everyone knows where to stay dry when it rains. One day I will be a daddy-rooster. That will be exciting! I can teach the babies all the things I know. Especially how to crow real loud at super early in the morning! Cockadoodle doooooo!
