Mabel is very special to us. When she came to us it was to help Goldie who was under a year and needed a partner. Goldie is a very sociable little lady and was pining for company. It was the middle of winter and it seemed impossible to find anyone with baby pigs. A breeder heard about our problem and very kindly helped. She had a four year old greed pig who was due for retirement. She assured us that Derby (the name she had called her by) was gentle and kind having raised several families. She offered her to us and we accepted. She proved to be kind not just guinea pigs but humans too. She loves to be cuddled and petted.
When Mabel joined her, Goldie cheered up and regained her appetite. We called her Mabel, after Auntie Mabel, a children's television character, because she was like an Aunt to our lonely pig.
In the spring two baby guinea pig sisters became available so we adopted them and now have a happy family with Mabel in her favourite role of mother. She is a fantastic mother, teaching the youngsters all she knows, what's good to eat, what shouldn't be bitten into and how to call for food.
A Poem to Mabel
Mabel with her light brown and fawn trimmed fur,
Is a beauty, with soft, gentle, black eyes.
Her looks reflect the love which shines from her.
She is beyond doubt, kind, gentle and wise.
To many if her kind she has given birth,
Taught them all they need to know about life.
How to be happy and how much its worth,
How to live life fully, avoiding strife.
