Here is my parrot Salty, a Yellow Shoulder Amazon, helping me fix my motorcycle, no doubt because he wants a ride on it when we are done. Sorry buddy, I don't have a helmet to fit you.
He is a smart boy, as you might guess, and we spend time training every day so he does not get bored. Some of the tricks or commands he knows include Circle, Roll over, Play dead, Laddering with chop sticks, Shakes hands, Goes through a ring, Goes thru tunnel, forwards and backwards ( peek-a-boo), Puts colored rings on posts, does Harness training and Carries and puts a ball into cup.
He had a great training session where he showed me that he will retrieve and put into his bowl any ball I give him ... whiffleball, rubber ball, tennis ball, all of them (all miniature ones of course), and he does so so gently, it's really amazing in one so young and exuberant.
His repertoire also includes discovering treats under a piece of towel, flipping the colored rings over his head and stepping thru the colored rings, putting $ in his bank, pushing the shopping cart ( go shopping), Throwing the piece of towel away ( off the training table), Picking out Kings from a deck of playing cards, Climbing up the ladder and going down his slide, Picking out small animal toys and giving them to me, and Throwing a large 4" whiffle ball down the PVC tube (Throw it away, Salty).
We do trick training on our coffee table after I clean it off, and set up all the tricks. He ain't walking away from anything - Salty loves his treaties too much.
Recently Salty has taken to talking his fool head off while my wife is prepping dinner. Its cracks me up because he runs through almost everything he says normally and there is always new stuff he decides is squawk worthy. Sometimes its things from Youtube videos and sometimes its things that we say to him or Tinker, our Cairn terrier, or to each other. "Come ON Tinker, get in here", "Be careful there" which Geri says all the time to Salty as he hangs by one toe, "Where's **** " which could be Me, or Geri or Erik, and the mystery name, "Lou Ferigno," we have no idea where he picked that up from. All of these plus the Youtube stuff coupled with all sorts of laughs and snippets of classical opera. It's almost my favorite time of the day, sitting in the living room, smelling dinner getting ready and listening to Salty.
I have a YouTube channel where you can see videos of Salty - he is an amazing boy, and we love him!
