Nero the Green Cheek Conure, the Pet of the Day
Name: Nero
Age: One and a half years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Yellow-Sided Green Cheek Conure
Home: Woodstock, Illinois, USA

I have PTSD due to extreme childhood abuse, 17 years worth of hell. I still get horrid flashbacks and nightmares that make me wake up in a panic and ready to fight. That's where Nero comes in. When I have a flashback or nightmare Nero is right there ready to calm me down.

He will snuggle up close to me and start grooming me telling me "It's OK daddy." "You safe, I here." and things of the sort. Having little Nero with me does wonders to calm me down after a PTSD episode. He can even tell when I'm starting to have a PTSD nightmare and will yell his head off to wake me up so it doesn't get too bad. Any time he senses anything is off with me, he will do his best to get my attention and distract me from it which helps so much.

I'm working on getting him harness trained so he can go out with me and get registered as a proper emotional aid animal. Any time anyone tells me a bird can't be an aid animal, I just laugh at them because they've never seen little Nero in action. He is a great helper bird! He is one and a half years old - his hatchday is in mid October, so he is still a young bird and we will have many years ahead together.

Nero himself is a little clown. He does all kinds of funky dances and silly things. His nicknames are "Red Butt" due to his red tail, "Little baby beep" because he'll make beep noises at me, then I beep back and we get into a beeping contest. He also has a girlfriend, Virginia, who's a peach faced love bird and he's very protective of her. His favorite food is egg whites but he also loves steamed corn and applesauce.

Nero also has a decent number of words at his disposal and puts together his own phrases. I would list them, but there's a lot to list. He's most certainly a little talker. He also snores, yes, apparently parrots can snore, I did not know this until I got Nero. Then there's also his sleep talking which is adorable.

Overall Nero is one spoiled ii'l boy but he's such a sweety and snuggle friend. Of my six-member flock, he has to be one of the most affectionate.
