Blue came to me needing to be restarted. He had gotten into a bad frame of mind and had become rude and unsociable, and the owner no longer had the time or motivation to deal with him. He was so rude, his connections called him "Lucifer." At the time I was also in a spot in life where I needed a restart, and it worked for both of us.
He's a very special young man now that he's more social- he's quite the ham, and he's always looking for an apple. He's a bit of a "negative leader" in the sense that he deems it perfectly acceptable to be naughty in order to get attention. He'll pull fly masks off of other horses, steal food, and if he doesn't have a special lock on his gate, he'll open it and then proceed to let everyone else out as well. In the pasture he will rile the other horses up and then proceed to lead them into rushing around when their owners come to bring them in for riding or feeding. There have been times when he's done this and then proceeds to dance circles around me as if he's laughing at me. He's deeply offended if you walk past him without saying hello or petting him before you pet another horse. He's very attached to me, and he has to know where I am at all times when I'm at the barn or else he starts whinnying and pacing restlessly.
He loves having his picture taken, and will often strike a pose of some sort. When he's decided he's done with picture taking, he'll turn his back end to you and refuse to look at you. He also loves music and will nudge the pocket my phone is in when he's decided it's too quiet. He likes to look at himself in my car mirror, and while horses cannot recognize themselves in mirrors, he would have you fooled into thinking he's checking his appearance.
He is also up for anything. Whether I'm riding dressage, doing western pleasure, reining, or looking to jump, he does his best to go along with it. He may not enjoy it, but he's always willing to try anything at least once. He also thinks he's a racehorse; his favorite thing to do is bypass the trot and see how far he can gallop down the arena before he's brought to a stop. That being said, he's a perfect gentleman for young children who have never ridden before, and will give them rides around the arena at a snail's pace. His personality is as big as his heart and he knows the difference between me (where he can get away with being naughty), and an inexperienced rider who needs a steady, well behaved mount. He never fails to find a new way to surprise and impress me, and he's what gets me out of bed every morning. Quite literally. If I'm not out of bed by 6 am he starts screaming bloody murder because breakfast shouldn't be late. Ever.
