Nikita and Leonid the Gerbils, the Pet of the Day
Name: Nikita, Leonid
Age: One year old
Gender: Male
Kind: Gerbil
Home: Slovakia

These are my gerbils, my sweet boys. Nikita (black and white) and Leonid are brothers and best friends. They are one year old. One year ago, I was at home because I was feeling sick. But it wasn't that bad so I decided to go out. I went to a small pet shop near by my house. While I was crossing around some cages I saw them. There was a big gerbil mommy with seven tiny babies. I noticed them immediately: two little guys. The first one was black and white and his brother was pale. In fact, I have never seen anything more adorable that this. It was a quite long time since my first gerbil Lucky has sadly died in the old age and was missing these beautiful and intelligent creatures. As I was staring at these two I decided: They must be mine (because right when I saw them I fell in love with them). Of course, they were very young and small (around 4-5 cm) and I knew that I had to wait. But I was worried that someone could take them before me. Fortunately, they grew up full of strength and I was freaking happy when I saw them again, because now they were prepared to go with me.

Lucky, my first gerbil which is now jumping around the rainbow in heaven, was very old when I bought him. The only thing that was good about that was the next chance for him to die in a better place. But even when I was doing my best, he was never as loyal and loving as Nikita and Leonid, because as I said, he was very old and have never met people who wouldn't hurt him (except me).

It seems like a miracle how Nikita and Leonid are acting. They are like dogs. They love petting and running across the room. It seems like they completely trust me and my hands. Nikita is very smart and brave. He can jump to incredible distances. Leonid, well, he is smart too but he is a bit silly and sometimes seems really confused running across the room. He is better at climbing. Every time I arrive home they are waiting for me because they know that I'm going to get them out of the cage so they can run as long as they can. At the end, they get themselves back into the cage. They are wonderful!

Nikita is a very typical example of a "big brother." He is more dominant and stronger than Leonid and he is still protecting him from the surrounding world. He has a pretty black and white pelt. The seller called him as the most attractive gerbil in the shop, because of Nikita's noticeable coloring. Sometimes he is a bit more active than Leonid. Nikita is a very good jumper and mostly using it for fun and doing stupid things like jumping into my bed and much more. Once he jumped into my glass! Fortunately, there wasn't that much water to be worried. He is not that shy as Leonid, but that might be a problem sometimes, because even if he has never bitten me he might be kind of aggressive to the other people. That's what happened when my mother's friend came to visit us. She called him a hamster when she saw him. I know that people might be wrong and it's not their fault to make a mistake, but wouldn't it be better to ask what kind of animal it is than saying things like this. To be honest, I don't really like it, because through all the excuses, there is a giant difference between gerbils and hamsters. The most noticeable detail is that gerbils have tail! Probably, Nikita was thinking the same when he bitten her finger. But everybody was ok, so it was almost alright. She was totally shocked and when she turned her face to me I just said: „It's a gerbil, you know." I know, I know that I should ask her if she is okay first, but I saw she was. I'm sorry for that.

Leonid is Nikita's brother and best friend. He is very kind and loving to others, but he is still a bit shyer than Nikita. He loves petting and sleeping all day. Leonid is also a great climber. While running across the room, he is always able to climb chairs, pillows or seats of any height. His skills are very useful for him being a curious and naughty gerbil. He loves climbing on me, my back, my head and shoulders. When he gets on my shoulder he just sits down and take a little nap like a parrot sitting on the owner's shoulder. Although, is very curious, he is still careful and shy by discovering unexplored places. That's why there are not that much crazy stories about him, because as I have said, while Nikita is brave and unchained, Leonid is philosophising and planning strategies how to get to a new interesting place. But even if he is such a smart and prudent kind of pet there are some weird stories of him. Once, when I wasn't looking what are they doing, Leonid climbed up to my bed. While he was there he randomly found something interesting to him. It was a small gap behind the mattress. And as you can imagine, he decided to go there. But for the first time in his life, Leonid wasn't looking carefully and before I noticed it he fell into the gap. I jumped up and trying to put him out. But Leonid wasn't scared. He was satisfied because he finally found something new: the dark space under the bed. So, I was desperately trying to safe him, and he-he was wondering under the bad and didn't want to get out. At the end, I had to disassemble the whole bed to get him back to the cage. He seemed disappointed when I put him out.

LLeonid is also very social and can't take being without his bro. He loves Nikita very much and he is following him everywhere as his "little" brother. Even if Nikita is hiding in some sort of very small space, which isn't big enough for two gerbils.
