Dragon the Silkie Bantam Rooster, the Pet of the Day
Name: AO - Dragon
Age: Two years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Silkie Bantam Rooster
Home: East Ayrshire, Scotland, UK

His name is AO, but his nickname is Dragon. He's a Black Silkie Bantam Rooster. I've Had Dragon since he was an Egg. He hatched in the incubator in my kitchen. He hatched without any problems and seemed to be fit and healthy. The next day, after he dried out and was trying stand it was discovered he had a condition called Stargazing. It was a very sad discovery and chicks with stargazing rarely survive.

Stargazing is a vitamin deficiency which caused his brain to not function properly. He could not stand up without his head falling back causing him to fall over. This made eating and drinking very difficult. After a couple of days with no improvement I decided to look into what I could do. Asking my local vet and even a chicken group on Facebook. Both told me what I didn't want to hear, "He'll not survive for long." Saddened by this news I went into action I refused to give up on him and I give him my full time care, even with the knowledge that he could die regardless. I started to hold him upright regularly though the day and I would stay with him and help him eat his food and drink water I even gave him a vitamin solution that was meant for human children, anything to give him a chance to get stronger.

On day three it was like a miracle, He was standing on his own. Unsteady on his feet, but standing this was a great achievement and it made me all the more determined to keep working with him and trying everything I could to get him as normal as I possible could. I have a video on Facebook of him at three days old.

He continued to grow and improve with everything I was doing and I was so happy to see him get so much better. At 15 days old he was still small for his age but his improvement was amazing he could eat drink and stand on his own. I was so proud of him and his achievement.

He continued to grow and improve, His overall outlook on things was better to. He started exploring his world and his personality started to shine through. He started to follow me around a lot more and was very curious about everything. He even made friend with our dog and would play with him in the garden and run around. He still stumbled and would fall over now and then but he just got back up and carried on. He began to crow at three months old and boy was he loud, But luckily my neighbours didn't mind. We became an odd bunch family and I can't imagine my life without him.

He got his name AO from Ao Guang, is the Dragon King of the East Sea in Chinese mythology. Ao Guang had brought chaos to the world by creating droughts, storms, and other disasters. He also ascended to the heavens, and since my little chick had such a horrible entrance to the world I thought the name fitting. But not many people can pronounce AO so I just introduce him by his nickname of Dragon.

Now at two years old and fit and healthy, he still crows and runs around. He plays with the dog and he now lives outside in a large garden with heated coop with his friend and fellow rooster Dazzle the frizzle. The two of them are as thick as thieves and I know they are happy healthy and safe together. There are also other hens in the coop. Because a king is not a King without his pretty ladies. lol.

His story was a success and I don't regret anything. His life is a "told you so" in the face of those who didn't believe in him.
