Hi! My name is Pending Mischief (Penny for short), and I'm a Silver Laced Wyandotte Chicken. I got that name because wherever I go, Mischief is Pending! The photo of me in the pink blanket was taken on my very first day in my new forever home. There's also a photo of me standing behind Mommy's hand with my adopted sister Phoebe, a Dutch Welsummer, and my adopted brother Perkle. He was a Cuckoo Maran. That's me on the right, Phoebe in the middle, and Perkle on the left. Perkle developed something called a Chronic Condition with his hip and had to go to the vet and not come home. I wanted everyone to see him because Mommy and I loved him. I made sure to include a photo of all three of us helping Mommy play a game. That's me on Mommy's hand. Phoebe is in the middle, and there's Perkle trying to be cool. He could be a dork sometimes.
I live on a small farm with my Mommy, my four chicken friends, and Flea the Dog. I get to do all sorts of things here, including tree climbing! Bet you didn't know chickens can climb trees! Long long time ago we used to be jungle fowl, and many of us still like to play in trees. But I do lots more than just play in trees. My sister Phoebe and I also like to help Mommy make the bed. We're not very good at it, but the important thing is we try. I also like to help Mommy eat her lunch, but for some reason she doesn't want it after I put my feet in it.
I'm only five months old, but I have already laid my first egg! There I am in my sister Marley's sleeping box, practicing rolling an egg under my tummy. That's not my egg. That's Phoenix's. We just sorta lay eggs wherever we like. Mommy says she doesn't even care if we lay, because she loves all of us. Sometimes I get to sleep on the bed with Mommy when she takes a nap. I also help with gardening. Mommy would miss all sorts of bugs and worms if I wasn't there to look! And she drops seeds into the dirt! She's so careless. It's a good thing I am there to eat them for her. And since I have a sleeping box in the house, I get to wake her up in the morning by singing my special Morning Song. She also needs me to make sure that the dog food for Flea is just right. Flea is very old. If I don't check her food, who will? Boy, the whole house would fall apart without me! My most important job is to make sure the hot water bottle in Mommy's bed is just right. No one can sleep with cold toes.
People think chickens just lay eggs and cluck. But we do so much more! How would Mommy get along without me to taste her lunch and eat the seeds and check the dog food? This is all very important stuff. I don't know why my name is Pending Mischief. I think I'm terribly helpful!
