Gerald and Snowy are my first pets. Since they are gerbils, they need to be kept in at least a pair so they don't get lonely. They give our family lots of joy and hours of entertainment! Gerald loves cuddles and will happily sit with you watching tv. Snowy is more adventurous, loves chewing up boxes and tubes and building tunnels while digging upside down!
Gerbils are fairly easy to care for. They need to have a deep tank with lots of bedding because they love to tunnel and it is really fun to watch them as they "redecorate" their tank. Other things Gerald and Snowy love doing is chewing cardboard and paper. They can destroy a toilet paper or paper towel tube in minutes and boxes can at first be wonderful hides holes soon become shredded and Part of their bedding. They don't eat a lot, only about a teaspoon of food a day and drink very little. They don't drink much because they are desert animals. Thus, they don't wee much either.
We are lucky as our gerbils are "potty trained" and only use a small bowl with sand for their tolieting needs. There is very little, if any smell! Gerbils are very social animals and should always, if possible, be kept in at least a pair. They can be very active for a few hours and then sleep for a few hours. They love to explore! They are fairly easy to tame and with a little work you can get them to come out and have cuddles and play. Snowy' favourite treats are sunflower, pumpkin seeds and special herbal salad. Gerald's favourite treat is pumpkin seeds and salad. We love them both!
