Silas is the first gecko I have ever owned. A Goniurosaurus luii, or Chinese cave gecko, he is a small species of geckos with true eyelids (similar to leopard geckos) who hails from the Cao Bang province of Vietnam. Silas, himself, was born in the United States as I only work with captive bred animals.
This species is very uncommon as a pet, but more people seem to be learning about them. There is very little literature on these animals, but while working with them for a couple of years, I find them very easy to take care of. They are highly endangered in the wild, especially the Japanese and Vietnamese species, so be mindful and only buy captive born and bred animals.
Silas is very easy to handle and I take him out regularly for enrichment. Many claim that these animals are too jumpy or shy to handle, but I have never had problems with Silas. Like with most reptiles, he doesn't seek out attention or affection, but there is nothing wrong with this in my book. Simply caring for him and knowing that he is healthy is enough for me. He eats dusted crickets and roaches with grubs and hornworms as treats from time to time. He is a very special pet.
