Tanjiro the Budgerigar, the Pet of the Day
Name: Tanjiro
Age: Unknown
Gender: Male
Kind: Budgerigar
Home: Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Tanjiro came into my life five years ago when I was 17. I came home early from school because I finished my exam early but had a doctor's appointment soon after so I was allowed to go home earlier than my classmates. I remember coming through the door and being greeted by the sight of the most gorgeous blue bird I had ever seen! He was so tiny and scared in his little travel cage and he was sitting on the coffee table making noises like when you collect coins in a video game. I fell in love instantly and named him Tanjiro because it meant "highly valued second son" (I had taken my sister's budgie Buster in as my own little birdy baby).

Soon, Tanjiro and Buster became best friends and I loved watching Buster show him how to play on his tiny birdy teeter-totter and feed him and groom him. Poor Buster was very ill and dying, but he held on long enough to welcome his little baby brother into the family and show him how to be a wonderful little friend to everyone. I don't know Tanjiro's exact age, the pet store told my parents he was four months but he was already mature when they brought him home.

All these years later, Tanjiro is the sweetest, most gentle and loving bird I've ever met. He is great with my neighbour's grandchildren who adore him and love to visit him. He sits so nicely on their shoulders or fingers and does cute chirps and trills for them. He's a loving big brother to Malohkeh the yellowface budgie and lets Malohkeh boss him around and eat all his food and peck him on the bottom to make him move out the way.

His favourite food are snow peas, spinach, celery and carrots, preferably served to him by his beloved Granny (my mother). He's very much Granny's boy, he's always smooching her and grooming her and singing to her and he can say "granny's boy." He likes watching me brush my teeth in the morning and sings to me as I clean my teeth. He's a sweetheart and my little munchkin.

I love taking pictures of his "beard" and his lovely blue tummy, my friend used to say he has the sky on his belly. He's a special little fellow and I don't know what I'd do without him and his antics such as trilling along to "Neighbours" or "Law & Order" and pretending to whinge when I kiss his cheeks.
