Mune the American Mink, the Pet of the Day
Name: Mune
Age: Seven months old
Gender: Male
Kind: American mink
Home: Burlington, Connecticut, USA

This is Mune. He is an albino American mink who loves to get into trouble. He is a ranch mink from a farm (which is considered domesticated, which is why he is okay to have as a pet). Imagine the chaos and destruction of 10 ferrets wrapped into one little body and you have a pretty good idea of what he is like. Mune loves to knock the books off the shelf and steal food from your plate. He gets into tons of trouble but he is a good boy most of the time.

Mune is my second mink. He was born in April so he is about 7 months old now, though he was about 7 weeks old in these pictures. My first was also a rescue from a fur farm but he developed a back problem. As far as size mink are larger than ferrets; much more stocky and strong. They are also extremely smart and persistent. Mune as an adult weighs about 6 lbs, although domestic mink can get bigger than this. They make some noises. When excited, a mink will dook like a ferret and wag their tails. As a baby, they chirp to communicate with their mother although this is something they rarely do as adults. They can throw temper tantrums in which they make a great deal of noise, although they are pretty quiet most of the time. Some are more vocal than others.

Some mink are snuggly while others are very independent. They each have their own personalities. Mune is very playful and enjoys his toys but will snuggle when he gets tired. One of his favorite things to do is swim in the bathtub or the brook outside. He is graceful and able to swim under the water like an otter. Another of his favorite pastimes is to annoy the cat. Some mink are good with other pets while others are not. In fact some can be trained to hunt and return with the prey, much like a falcon will do.

Mink are much more agile and stronger than ferrets. They can get into a lot of trouble this way. One day I found Mune outside and had no idea how he got there as he was in a room on the second story. When I looked to see how he escaped, I saw a hole in the window screen. Mune climbed 6 feet up curtain to a window which that was cracked open at the top. He clawed through the screen and fell two stories onto pavement. He was fine except for a tiny chip on one of his canine teeth. I am surprised (and relieved) he did not hurt himself, but it goes to show how strong and durable they are. He almost gave me a heart attack! I love this little boy!
