Bunia is my first lop bunny, but not the first bunny at all - I had had a Hotot/Lionhead mix before her, his name was Leo and he crossed the Rainbow Bridge at the age of seven.
Bunia is more a dog than a rabbit - she reacts to her name being called, she always assists me when I cook, and she can play with sticks. She has her special bunny bed where she spends most of the daytime. Great jumper and avid thumper. She barks and grunts like a wild beast. She loves bananas and raisins and fresh dill. She has a wooden box on the balcony with organic home-grown oat grass - she loves having the grass for breakfast! She's our little ray of sunshine.
Bunia is a gift from my husband, I got her from the pet store (it was some time before I met some wonderful people from the local shelter and became an advocate of the "Adopt don't shop" idea myself). We went to the store and there were four tiny rabbits to choose from. I wasn't thinking about getting this particular one, I actually had my eyes on a black and white beauty but then I gently patted each bunny on the head and she was the only one to react. I did it again and got the same reaction - she was clearly interested in what my hand was doing! Well, I thought, it's decided, you're going home with us!
We have had Bunia since 17th March 2014. We were thinking of naming her "Patricia" (as she came to our house on St Patrick's Day) or Crayon (strangely enough, she smelled of wooden crayons), but eventually we decided that Bunia would be the best name for her. And she has nicknames-my husband calls her Bunisher (he's a fan of Punisher comics) and I call her Minion. She very quickly started to react when her name (or nickname) is called, especially by me.
She loves to jump onto our unmade bed in the morning, loves to be stroked, and loves eating vitrtually everything she is allowed to. As we don't have children, our parents refer to Bunia as "our grandchild" :-) We are thinking of adopting a handsome boy some day to keep her bunny company.
