Lulu is one of my three Diamond Doves, the other two being the female white rump named Romeo, and another male named Juliet, who has less speckles on his wings. He lives with me in England, though his species originated in Australia. I thought the brighter dove was the male, but it turned out that I had two males and a single female. The female, Romeo, appears to be at the top of the pecking order.
Lulu is quite a character, very outgoing and curious, but he is still a bit afraid of me unlike Romeo, who steps up on my finger. He is very snuggly and affecttionate, though. The duo also have an interesting relationship... They could go from cuddling and beak holding, to pecking at one-another in a heartbeat. It is quite amusing to watch their little squabbles, and neither seem to get harmed.
He and Romeo had an amusing argument once over their nest, on where this tiny piece of straw went in it. Lulu wanted it on the left, yet Romeo wanted it on the right. They kept moving it about making deep cooing noises, before Romeo then went to block the left side with her body and Lulu attempted to climb over her to put it there! Romeo then kicked Lulu out of the nest, and the next three nights, he was sleeping on the perch snuggled up to Juliet.
As for why I got them, I went to the pet store to look for Quails, and then heard a soft cooing and saw the three Diamonds in the cage. They could only be bought in pairs, yet there were three. I didn’t have the heart to leave one behind, and so I struck up a deal with the store owner and got the extra for another £5 ($7). I pretty much fell in love with the little birds the moment I saw them, and my internet history shown nothing but research on Diamond Dove care for the next few weeks.
The doves eat foreign finch mixed seed with the occasional mealworm, but it appears the quails enjoy the bugs more than the doves do. Oh, and they tend to transform from dainty and slim fliers into living balls of fluff when relaxed.
