My Quaker/Monk Parakeet/Parrot is named Quaker! Quaker was left by his previous family for unknown reasons and has made a new home with my little family. He came pre-named and already knew his name, so I left it. It felt cruel to change it on him at his age.
He's about 20 years old and I guess his family gave him up since they no longer wanted him or couldn't keep him. As far as Quakers go, he's actually very well behaved. He has low territorial behaviours and seldom bites, and has a fairly extensive vocabulary. He even has time specific phrases. He says
"peekaboo" during a game, and "good night!" when the lights are shut
off, or if I say "be right back, buddy". He also says "thank you!"
when given a treat, tells people to "get in the cage" and asks for
fresh water when he dirties it. He's very affectionate!
He had a feather pulling habit on his chest feathers (his chest feathers are noticeably short and downy), but they're finally growing back in after a few months of vitamin supplements and new full-spectrum lighting. We are glad he is happy here!
