This is Red Velvet, a very special crested gecko that I raised up from the egg. One of the things that makes Red Velvet so special is that neither of her parents is red. I always wanted a red crested gecko but could never afford one, and I am just so amazed that I ended up getting such an exquisitely extreme red gecko from non-red parents. It takes several months for the red color to show and as babies they don't have their adult coloration, but there was just something about Red Velvet that made me keep her ... her color wasn't red as a baby, but more like a beige-pink. I just thought she was going to be really beautiful when she grows up and by the time she was six months old she was already showing her red colors.
She also has a very sweet personality and doesn't mind kisses. This year I took Red Velvet for her very first visit with Santa (even geckos have their own little Christmas wishes too). I bought a Santa suit and had a friend dress up as Santa for the geckos. I wanted to have a special family portrait of Red Velvet with her brother Cappuccino, and her sisters Hershey and Truffle. I'm happy that Santa gave me so many great poses with Red Velvet and her family.
Crested geckos make great pets and have the potential to become very tame and docile with you, depending on how much time you spend interacting with them, but still with any pet, it's important to do your homework to find out their care requirements and if they will really fit in with your family's lifestyle. I know some people believe that reptiles are not capable of love and bonding, but I don't believe that and from my own experience, I know that's not true. I have several geckos that love to hang out with me on my shoulder, or even have a nap in my bra. And Red Velvet is such a perfect sweetie too.
I'm looking forward to spending a very special Christmas with my gecko family watching the snow fall.
