Dill is a bearded silkie rooster. Here he is in his Santa costume, ready for Christmas. Dill's nickname is Snowshoes. His original name was Daffodil, named by my four-year-old daughter; We were hoping he was a girl! It can be difficult to distinguish gender on a silkie until they are four to six months old.
He lives with 24 hens and five other roosters and he is the alpha rooster. Dill gets to sleep inside the house at night, because he likes to wake up and crow at 5:30am, which I'm sure the neighbors wouldn't appreciate. We are in the process of moving to a farm, where he will be able to crow to his heart's content. But for now, in a subdivision, we keep him quiet with a no-crow collar and bringing him inside to sleep. Otherwise he's a spoiled, free-ranging rooster and we hope to have some baby chicks out of him next year.
