We adopted these two precious girls, Penny and Phoebe, on August 21, 2014, from our local Humane Society, when they were about one year old. We celebrate their 'birthday' each year on August 21st since we do not know their actual dates of birth. We had named them after two of our favorite TV characters from "The Big Bang Theory" and "Friends."
Penny and Phoebe enjoy their spacious home where they like to play tag by running around their igloo and then whichever girl runs into the igloo first, is tagged on the booty by her roomie's nose. And then the game begins again! They also like to sneak up on each other; if Phoebe is in the igloo, Penny walks behind the igloo and raises the bottom of the igloo up with her nose, then with her shoulders, and then she scampers into the igloo to surprise Phoebe, who may or may not like that, depending on her mood! Sometimes, they each like a little privacy, when one of them wants to nap in the igloo by herself. The girls are pretty good about sharing their igloo with each other. Their relationship is on equal terms; neither being the leader or follower. They also like to lounge on our laps and enjoy unlimited chin rubs from Mom and Dad. If there is a trace of a veggie scent on my hand, they will both immediately pick up on it, with Penny playfully nipping and Phoebe licking all of my fingers, which then will lead to their getting an extra veggie treat from me!
The girls enjoy good health, and they are on a low-calcium diet, consisting of timothy hay, green pepper, broccoli, brussel sprouts, romaine and bibb lettuces, celery, carrots, and red grapes. They also get a small daily serving of the Oxbow brand guinea pig pellets fortified with vitamin C. As a treat, they love the Oxbow brand hay rings and vitamin C tablets. Both girls work hard for their three veggie meals every day, as they both will stand straight up on their hind legs for about 30 seconds at a time, with perfect balance!
We have an important tip for small pet parents: if you notice that your pet is not drinking much water, try re-adjusting the height of their water bottle. We originally had Penny and Phoebe's water bottles a little too low, which evidently was too uncomfortable for their necks. We raised their bottle holders by a couple inches, and both girls immediately began to drink much more water every day!
Also, small pet parents, please consider to adopt your next family member from your local Humane Society or animal shelter. There are always lovable, funny, and intelligent furry friends waiting there for a nice pet parent to take them home!
