On December 12, 2015, adorable Mr. Belvedere entered our lives ~ and hearts! Belvedere was labelled "unadoptable" by the staff at the Humane Society because of his age (about four years old) and the fact that he had been at the shelter for several weeks. (We always adopt guinea pigs that are "seniors" and/or considered "unadoptable.")
Mr. Belvedere felt at home immediately with us! He is a lovebug! He immediately loved attention and cuddling ~ when you kiss his face, he returns the love by licking your face like a puppy! (He never bites!) He adores veggies (we think he was deprived of fresh food at his previous home). His favorite foods are green leaf lettuce, green pepper, baby carrots, Timothy hay, and Oxbow's Timothy Treats. He begs for veggies many times daily ~ he thinks is never full! Belvedere also loves his weekly treat of Oxbow's Critical Care and has gained almost 4 ounces since we adopted him. When he has a full tummy, he will fall asleep anywhere, even on his toys! When our great veterinarian gave Belvedere a check up and took an x-ray, he pointed to a large cloudy area in his belly and said with a smile, "This is all undigested food." LOL! (Thankfully, Mr. B is in perfect health!)
Belvedere never whistles. About two weeks after adopting him, I was in the kitchen and I heard a bell ringing frantically. I thought it was our sweet rescued Eurasian tree sparrow playing with his toys but it was Belvedere ringing the toy bell in his cage and this immediately became his way of begging for veggies daily! He rings his bell wildly about 10 times a day! After he rings his bell violently, he looks over at you and then stands on his hind legs, stretching and begging! If you don't feed him fast enough, he rings his bell again and again! Who can resist indulging this smart, sweet, precious boy?
Mr. Belvedere has brought so much joy and hearty laughter to our household! He truly loves his life! To know Mr. Belvedere is to love him . . . And we can't imagine life without him! We hope Belvedere's happy story inspires others to adopt older pets who are homeless. All animals need love, security, and care, no matter what age or size.
