Lulubelle or Lu for short, was born on March 20, 2014 at about four in the afternoon. She was a triplet, though one of her sisters was stillborn.
Shortly after birth, due to a selenium deficiency, her legs locked straight out, and she could not been them to stand. As we do with all kids, we have her an injection of BoSe, (selenium and vitamin E) and she got a triple dose.
Then, we held her up so she could get her fill of colostrum. Later she began bouncing and thrashing like she was having a seizure, and did it at three minutes intervals for the next three hours. At the time, we had no clue what was going on, and didn't know if she was going to live or not. Looking back, she was simply trying to stand when her legs were locked. The instinct to stand is very strong, as in the wild, if you don't stand, predators will come eat you.
Anyway, at about nine o'clock, the BoSe set in, the thrashing stopped, her legs loosened, and she was able to stand! The next morning, Lu had bloody diarrhea. Most likely all that thrashing caused internal damage. With guidance from our vet, and more injections, in a couple of days, Lu was fine and on her way to becoming a nice little goat.
Lu is very special because she is so sweet, and because she has overcome such great odds in her life. She is a fighter for sure!
