We adopted Birdsie when he was about four years old. He had a huge personality and was absolutely fearless (little bird, big bird attitude). Being very tame, he would let anybody hold him (or better yet, he'd perch on their shoulder). He loved to eat many of the foods we ate (including chicken and eggs, which we thought was rather funny). He especially loved pasta, and he'd jump on the plate before it got to the table.
Birdsie got his name because his first human was a primary school teacher. She brought him to school every day and let the kids name him. What else would 6 year olds name a bird?!
He loved to take baths in a shallow pie dish. His other games were playing living mechanical bank, where he'd sit in a huge brandy snifter (empty, of coures), and we'd put a coin on the edge; Birdsie would grab the coin and drop it into the snifter. We also had a little balsa wood dumbell, and when Birdsie would pick it up, we'd cheer him on. He looked quite proud of himself!
Birdsie Wordsie had a big adventure. He escaped one rainy Sunday afternoon and flew into a tree behind our housel No matter how we tried, he wouldn't (or couldn't) come down. He kept going higher into the canopy, and then flew off. We could hear him screeching and did everything we could to try to get him to come home. He was gone for three days. We placed an ad in the local newspaper, finally got a call from a woman who lived about 3/4 of a mile away. Birdsie had flown onto her son's shoulder, and the son brought Birdsie into the house. When my husband went to pick him up, Birdsie was one very happy little bird! He flew over to my husband and went into his shirt (one of his favorite places).
A year or so after his big adventure, Birdsie got sick; there was fluid in his pericardial sac, and sadly, our vet was unable to save him. We'll always miss him; he was one of the coolest birds ever!
