I have always had companion animals. There are only two few month periods of time that I can remember not having an animal in my house. In July 2010, my birthday was coming up, and it was during one of the times that we were animal-less. I had begged my parents to get me either a hamster or a bird for my birthday, because I hated not having an animal friend. On my birthday, when it was time for me to open my presents, I saw an oddly shaped box. Of course I went to open that one first, but my mom told me to save it for last. After I opened my other gifts, I picked up the box, tore off the paper, and found one of the boxes that you put an animal in at a pet store. I excitedly opened the box, and was very disappointed when I found a glass bird in it. I thought it was going to be a living animal. A little while later, my parents told me to close my eyes, and they brought out a small purple and white bird cage, and told me that I could go and get a budgie. I was so excited. A little over a week later, I went to the pet store, and picked out a beautiful blue budgie. I took her home, and my mom put her in the cage. My family helped me pick a name from my list of names, and I went with Weasley. After that, I sat in there with her, and talked and sang to her. When it was time for her to go to bed, I asked my mom to get me a blanket to cover her cage with. After we got the blanket, my mom said we should sing her a bedtime song, so we sang her the "Goodbye Song," from Bear in the Big Blue House, except we changed the word goodbye to goodnight. Then I covered her and put her to bed.

Weasley and I became fast friends. She learned to step up very easily, which made me so happy. I would talk to her and sing to her. I read her stories, Harry Potter was a favorite. One one of the silliest things I remember doing, is watching a "Mommy and Me" episode with her, and singing all the songs to her as if she were my child.

A few months after I got her, I decided that she needed a bird friend. She was happy, but not as happy as she could be. So I brought home another budgie, who I named Hermione. They became good friends. Despite Weasley becoming friends with another bird, we were still best friends.

In July 2011, I brought home another budgie, Bellatrix, who quickly stole Hermione's attention from Weasley. So in September, I got Weasley another friend, a male named Jacob. After his quarantine, when they met, Jacob liked Weasley right away. Weasley, on the other hand, didn't like him all the much. But for a couple weeks, Jacob followed her around and tried, and she finally accepted him. Once she decided to be friends with him, they fell in love, and became a tightly bonded pair. They adored each other. Although Weasley was now in a flock with three other budgies, she still loved me.

I had the perfect little flock with my four budgies and my conure. I was happy, Weasley was happy, and so were the other birds. All five of us were friends.

Weasley's mate, Jacob, passed away in October 2012, leaving both me and Weasley heartbroken. Weasley was so upset. For days, all she did was sit in the corner and do nothing. It made me even more upset then I already was. But we mourned together, and helped each other.

On April 21st, 2013, when I was putting Weasley to bed, she was acting really silly. As I was trying to take the food bowls out of the budgie cage, she kept hoping inside of them and coming out with them. I had my dad come in, and hold the food dish so that I could have her step up. I put her back in her cage, laughed, and told her what a silly girl she was and that I loved her. And that is the last memory I have of her living. When I woke up the next morning, April 22nd, she was still and lifeless. My heart shattered. I was beyond heartbroken. My precious baby was gone. I didn't know what to do. I cried for days and days. It was, and still is, the saddest day of my life.

It has been over two years since she passed away, but not a day goes by that I don't think of her. She is my happy thought.

If it wasn't for Weasley, I wouldn't be the person I am today. She is the bird who started it all for me. She taught me so much, and showed me so much love. Because of her, I have done so many things. And I am so thankful. So thankful that it was her who I picked out. Things could have gone so differently had a picked out another budgie that day, so many years ago.

Thank you, Weasley. I am eternally grateful.
