This
wee man was born to me in a surprise litter. He has two lovely sisters,
and his old dad Snoopy, who is now a year old. In the photo with the two,
Snoopy is the father and the tiny one is Spunky. His father Snoopy is what is
called a fatal black self; meaning he has no yellow hairs or any other color
to ruin the black. I thought at first Spunky was the same. He has not got
gold in his ears like his two sisters that I still have. But interestingly
enough, as he has aged his belly has shown to have a dusting of white and
gold fur. They call it an inferior imperfect gene in the mouse breeding
community. But as far as I'm concerned it adds character. His mum was white
and coffee, but all three children were black as their dad. Only difference
is his sisters are longhaired angoras like mum, while Spunky is a "mini me"
for Snoopy. He also has the longest eyebrow whiskers I have ever seen on a
mouse. He is even short haired and longhairs typically have longer whiskers
too. And his eyebrow whiskers are pure white.
Sadly when this boy and his sisters were wee their mum could't provide enough
milk. It was a very small litter, there was a fourth but it was stillborn. So
I got lucky and was able to get a surrogate mum to help Spunky's mum feed. As
they grew from half starved pinkies, I hand-raised and spoiled them like
crazy. Spunky turned out the nicest of the three. I have trained him to take
treats from the roof of his cage, as he sometimes gets a tad tubby and needs
exercise. He spends a lot of his time in bed, he is a mouse potato. He rarely
runs on his wheel as much as some others. He sometimes climbs his cage mesh
roof, which I encourage.
He has grown into a big fat squish, and is the most tolerant of the three
siblings of being smooched to death. Despite his name he is the calmest of
the three. I had considered switching his name with his sister Sugar, as she
is almost the exact opposite; energetic, active and nosey. But in the end
Spunky somehow stuck and I didn't want to confuse myself with changing names.
Spunky won't even come out of bed to get treats a lot of the time while his
sisters are inquisitive and grabby. He is quite a gentle soul, and takes
after his dad for personality too. Lately he has been a brat and runs away
from me when I try and hold him, but I'm glad he is trying to be Spunky to match his name.
